Adobe Posts Critical Security Patch for Acrobat and Reader

David posted recently about a serious Acrobat (and Reader) JavaScript Buffer Overrun Attack. Adobe has now posted a critical security patch for current versions of Acrobat 9 and Adobe Reader 9.

The security bulletin reports:

Adobe recommends users of Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9 update to Adobe Reader 9.1 and Acrobat 9.1. Adobe is planning to make available updates for Adobe Reader 7 and 8, and Acrobat 7 and 8, by March 18.

It’s highly recommended that you update all your copies of these applications.

Also note that, because this is a major upgrade (to version 9.1), there are other bug fixes in this release of the applications as well. Release notes are available which list the others issues which are fixed with this release.

Surprisingly, the Adobe updater for CS4 didn’t update Acrobat 9. I had to download the update directly from Adobe and run it.

I’ve noticed that the Adobe updater doesn’t add updates immediately. Sometimes, there’s a day or two delay. I noticed, for example, that the recent Camera Raw updater was announced (and was available for direct download) about two days before it showed up in the Adobe updater.

Adobe is a big company, and sometimes things take a while to get from one department to another. Not like a small company where you walk over to Joe, who immediately puts it up on the website.

Yes, it’s available now — along with an updated updater!

Got this the other day and thought it was an odd update. Glad to know that Adobe is still on top of things despite what they’re going through.

Did anyone have problems installing this update?

    I get a very odd error message….

    “Update failed
The patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled).
Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch. Or, you can uninstall and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch.”

I haven’t disabled any plugins or otherwise ‘interfered’ with the installation. I installed the update OK on an Intel iMac, but on my iMac G5 I get the above…

Of course, there is no information to be found over at adobe.com on this matter…

Pulling my hair out!!!!! Sometimes I hate Acrobat.

I got exactly the same message when trying to install an update to Reader 9.2 on a new Macbook Pro Intel machine. Previously I got a message, when trying to open Reader 9, “you cannot run this application because it is not supported on this architecture.”

Same error on PowerBook G4. I have been uninstalling CS3 because it did not install patches for the same reason. Now with Reader 9.0. I hate Adobe!

Same here, same error for the file that updates to 920. For the amount of money paid, there should be a better updater then this. What I hate about updates in CS4, is that when the updates are done (pass or fail) all the files are deleted and you have to redownload the update to try again. Just plain STUPID.
