The biggest glitch on Vista is that InDesign will not open Pagemaker files. If you're switching from Quark it's no big deal but it's a major issue for PM users. From the little I can find out about it, this is primarily a Windows bug but it will be worked around in CS3.

Y'know, in this case the question of whether or not to upgrade may rest solely with your operating system.

First, if you're an Intel Mac user and using CS2, CS3 (which is "Intel ready") might be reason enough to upgrade if you think CS2 runs too sluggish on your Mac.

Second, I wonder if there will be any glitches with CS3 on Vista. I'm sure lots of internal testing has gone on at both MS and Adobe, but being a former tester at MS, I know how some things don't come to light until a wider audience is using the software.

Well, remember that Adobe had never really done a public beta before. It's still kind of amazing to me that they did that with Photoshop at all. Perhaps it was just a "test drive" and will do more of this in the future.

As for how good the InDesign CS3 upgrade will be: Check back tomorrow! But no matter how good it is, there will be a group of people who say, "Well, it doesn't offer anything for <em>me.</em>" Of course, there are plenty of people who are still happy using QX4 and don't see any benefit in upgrading to anything else. No one should upgrade unless they think it'll be worth it to them.

To a certain degree, Robert, I agree with you...unless there's some new feature that takes one of the titles to the next level, one could do without jumping in right now.

But I've found with some software that even a few minor tweaks are often worth the expense if it's saving me time. (That's just my own feelings, though.)

With Photoshop, I've been intriqued by better selection tools that make it easier to extract and object from a photo. (Granted, there are some good third-party tools that do that, too.)

That's also why I would have liked to have seen a public beta with InDesign. Obviously they take user feedback into account when coming up with a new version, but there's nothing like the public feedback you get when a far larger number of people are hammering on it "on the line."

As for Vista and Office 2007...no thanks...no desire to restart the process of getting my computer to the point where it doesn't blue screen the moment I look at it the wrong way. ;)

From what I have seen as a user of photoshop is save your money. I dont expect much from the indesign upgrade either. Sure there are super power users of photoshop that will gush over some of the "new features" for the average person/user there is no benefit. This applies to the vast majority of upgraded software out there from Office 2007, Vista, you name it. At least for photoshop I think they might have gone as far as they can. I think there are things that can be improved in indesign-however I doubt this upgrade is going to be needed for 99% of users. Especially at the high costs of upgrading.

I agree, Mike. It seems its a bit more important for inDesign CS3 users to identify and eliminate potential print problems than for Photoshop CS3 users to get a chance to user their new filters a year early. Boo!

Unless I've missed it, I haven't seen much on what new goodies to expect in InDesign.

Compare that to Photoshop where there was a public beta which, I'm assuming, helped to shape the final product at least a little bit.

(Or going even further: Lightroom which appears to have been heavily influenced by the feedback from public beta testers.)

I know this would have probably been a huge burden to Adobe, but it would have been nice to have a public beta of InDesign in the hope that user comments would take care of those little issues that seem to make us scratch our heads when a new version is released.

Still, I'm very much looking forward to what's in store for us in InDesign and can't wait to get my hands on it.
