Can’t “SSE” Your Tools in CS4? Here’s Why.
It doesn’t take a genius to know that the when a new version of any software is released it’s just a matter of a short period of time until the bugs start getting reported. Most of the time these are minor annoyances and can be worked around. Additionally, those bugs are usually platform independent; Mac and Windows users get to suffer just the same with them. Not so, with this one, so Mac users can breathe a sigh of relief and stop reading right now.
If you’re on Windows and missing your tools (as in the screenshot below) or finding that InDesign is having other display issues, it’s quite likely that your computer is using a processor that doesn’t support SSE2. Among the effected processors is the AMD Athlon X. Adobe is aware of the issue and has released a knowledge base article but unfortunately right now there’s no fix for it.
The link to that Knowledge base article is provided here so that if you are suffering with this issue, you’ll be able to check for updates there.

I’ve actually run into this problem on my iMac. I have a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, so I’m not sure how that would effect me. Anyway, all I do is hit tab twice and the images re-appear (this also affects panels and their content).
I’m not sure is SSE2 problem. I have white tools icon on CS3(5.0.4, Windows Vista, Nvidia Quadro FX 370). My procesor is C2D E8600…
Have same problem with Intel Mac Pro (early).
When installed CS4 initially was fine; only the past week have I started experiencing the missing icons in the toolbox pallet.
I click the dark border at the top twice. Clicking once reorients the distribution of the tools, 2nd click puts it back to single column view. Both clicks 1 and 2 restore the icon views.
Hitting tab twice also restores it fine.
I haven’t seen this one, but CS4 has a different InDesign-specific Windows UI (under Vista, at least) bug that’s fairly minor but qualifies for David’s “make-you-crazy” list.
It’s been mentioned elsewhere that ID doesn’t remember its window size from one session to the next . What really gets my capricorn is that you can’t grab the top window edge to resize it, but the bottom tucks itself neatly out of reach behind the taskbar. I’ve reported it as a bug, so perhaps in the dot release it’ll be addressed.
This issue appears to be FIXED as of today 6.0.1 update
I’m happy to finally announce that the issue incomplete UI display and pages panel crashes on Windows systems with lack of SSE2 instruction set is now resolved in the InDesign CS4 6.0.1 update which can be downloaded from here:
