Finding InDesign on Facebook
November 27th, 2007While some of us believe that InDesign is the only friend we’ll ever need, and we talk incessantly to our computer screens, waiting for the day that it starts talking back, other people apparently believe that the only way to have meaningful relationships is with humans. Strange, no? Well, if you’re looking for other humans who are interested in InDesign, you might find a few on one of the social networking sites on the Web, such as Facebook.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a novice at dealing with such sites. Being over 40 and happily married, I hardly know a hookup from a hangup. But that shouldn’t stop any of us from joining up, making a few friends, and exploring these new worlds.
There are a number of InDesign-related groups on Facebook, including InDesign Addicts and Fans of the InDesign Conferences, Adobe InDesign & DTP Tips and Tricks, and InDesign Israel. If you’re trying to find other interested folks in your neighborhood, you might try the Meetup.
Of course, no discussion of social networking would be complete without mentioning the real life InDesign User Groups, where some of the best InDesign-related networking is available. There are new groups starting all over, including Munich, London, and Nagoya.
By the way, I should mention that if you do join one of these groups, and you find me there, and you invite me to be a “friend”… please don’t be offended if I don’t say “yes!” Like many other folks, it’s my policy to only accept “friends” who I actually know and have correspondence with in non-social-networking worlds.
Are there other sites you know of where like-minded InDesign users can hang out and learn from each other? Tell us below!

Don’t forget the group Indesign is better than quarkxpress.
In south america, the Orkut.com, (i guess that facebbok is one of this sites..) rules in number of users.
I’m from Brazil and the ‘biggestest’ comunity, ‘Adobe InDesign (Brasil)‘ have about 3.000 members!
InDesign is better tha quark!! what a cool idea for another one…! haha
At the risk of blowing my own trumpet, in a short time I became the MVP at the TEK-TIPS forum for InDesign. I’m not saying I’m great or anything but I’ve helped with small problems and threw my hat in at larger problems that I’m not 100% sure on.
It seems there are about 3 or 4 really good postees on here and just about a hundred questions, a few more expert minds would be wonderful here. If you get a chance, stop by, correct my input, correct others, answer questions and find solutions.
I always look forward to educating people and I always look forward to being corrected, educated and passing on the information and the circle begins again.
Thanks
For those native German-speakers I recommend hilfdirselbst.ch
I had forgotten about Orkut; thanks, Rodrigo! There is also an English language Orkut community.
Yes, there are also lots of forums where people are getting questions answered (such as the one Eugene mentioned, and the biggest — adobe.com/forums) But those are really for question and answer, not building personal relationships or meeting up with other folks.
and oh, i started a Melbourne InDesign User Group in Facebook too. =)
