These are great – love them.Means I can work away on other things when exporting to pdf. Handy. But how do I know when it's finished? How do you know if there is a background task? There's a clue right on your screen without having to go to Window>Utilities>Background Tasks

And this only shows up when a background task is being performed.

Unfortunatley it doesn't tell you what background task is being run – nor can you double click it or use any modifier keys to open the Background Task panel.

But at least it's some sort of indicator that something is happening in the background.

So some advances could be made here

1. Allow access to the Background Task panel while clicking the indicator

2. Retain any performed background tasks as a list in the panel, so later on I can double click the task to open the PDF at a later date.

Reason for no.2 is that sometimes I want to keep working and don't need to see the pdf open so I don't always click the option in the PDF settings. But I would like easier access to my exported pdf and the Background Task panel could potentially leave me a link to open the PDF I made earlier.

Anyway – I hope that helps some people out :D

Awesome tip… I have to say  I love this feature.  Might be the one thing I am completly stoked about with getting the upgrade.  Now if they would just handle Packaging files the same way!

I wanted the CS5 upgrade for this purpose alone. Often creating a PDF and printing that goes faster than printing directly from InDesign, and the added benefit of being able to keep working while doing this is priceless.

The Background Tasks panel should indeed show a history of completed tasks. Let's hope Adobe listens to our feature requests and upgrades the panel in CS6.

Oh I don't think they frequent this forum or other forums (even their own) for feature requests.

We can all file one here though :)

Haha you don't want to know how many times I've used that form after every upgrade :) I'll run back there to add another one: if at all possible, they ought to put the print process, at least after all data has been gathered, into the background tasks too.

This feature is great, but I don't have my Application Bar or Application Frame open because I feel they are a waste of screen space and aren't necessary for what I do. Every inch of my screen and desktop window is prime real estate. I don't like to have any extra windows or panels open if they aren't necessary. Is there a way to access this feature without having either of those two panels open? For the reason I mentioned above, I also don't like having to have the Background Tasks window open (by going to Window>Utilities>Background Tasks). And I don't like having to close it and reopen it every time. So I just leave it open all the time, but it's taking up precious space.

I liked CS4 better. I would rather have the progress indicator bar showing me when my file is done exporting a pdf. I really wish they had designed CS5 so you could disengage the background task if you don't want to work on other things while your file is busy doing something.

No, there is no way to get the progress bar back. But you don't need to do other work. You can just sit there and stare at the screen for a while until the PDF is exported. Turn on the View PDF option and just wait for it to open in Acrobat.

You can always put the file into a book and export from the book panel. But watching the progress bar is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

Would it be possible to write a script to open the background window automatically when the PDF starts and close it automatically when it's finished?

BTW, I just found your site. Thanks for all the great articles and tips!

There is some talk about something similar going on here: http://forums.adobe.com/messag…..16#3584716

Maybe we'll see a cool script come out of this.
