For example I've placed three images aligned, with all of the having a gap of 2 mm. I want to resize all of them, but not change the 2 mm gap. Anyone know any tricks to do this?

When you resize items like that the spacial relationship would also change slightly, due to increments in scaling.

If you open the Align Panel (SHIFT F7) you can set the space to be 2mm.

Then select all 3 images – hold down CTRL (CMD) SHIFT and drag the 3 images by the corner handle to resize them.

Click the Distribute Horizontal Space to set the space to 2mm.

You'll notice a slight shift in position. Resize the image again, and redistribute the spacing.

But the emboldened part there is probably what you were after, if you want them exactly 2mm apart, then the rest of it is how.

Thanks Eugene, I guess I just have to rely on the Distribute Spacing on the align palette. I was just thinking that they may be a modifier key with the resize tool or the gap tool to do this. I think it would really be nifty if Adobe had a modifier key for this with the gap tool. I think thats a common design routine to keep gaps the same. Example in my magazine all the gaps between the pics are 2mm. Anyhow thanks for the tip! :)
