I am doing a CDROM Publishing Project which vigorously need Relative link.

I tried in different way and failed to work in PDF.

Our project is using Adobe Acrobat. We design layout in Indesign and then make hyperlink and Export to PDF.

I want a Relative Hyperlink so that from TOC, Link to each Chapter is needed. Any Help?

I am a Long user of Indesign Secrets and I am fan of this website, but this is my first post after creating a free membership, my first hi to all the folks in Indesignsecrets!!Confused

Are the chapters distinct PDF files? If not — the entire book is one PDF — you should be able to create the hyperlinks automatically:


* Generate the TOC using InDesign's TOC feature, being sure that "Create PDF Bookmarks" is checked in the Table of Contents dialog, along with the "Include Book Documents" checkbox if you are using an InDesign book.

* Export with the "Include Bookmarks" and "Include Hyperlinks" checkboxes ticked.

But My PDFs are distinct. I found a way to do the relative link through Adobe Acrobat.

So after export some tweaking is needed in Adobe Acrobat.

But It's not possible in Indesign. Can you have some clue.

Moreover, Relative link in Adobe Acrobat is working for Web links and not for File links

Any idea to do it in Indesign.

Generally I don't know whether Open a file link in Acrobat supports Relative Links.

Which version of ID you have? At least with CS4 you should be able to make hyperlink that points to a page instead of URL. And there´s also an option for choosing document as well. It´s possible that your documents should be gathered together with Book-feature for using page-linking from one document to another…I´m not sure about that…

I'm sorry, but I don't think there is any way to set this up with relative links such as "../images/foo.pdf". I don't think ID can do that. I didn't know that Acrobat could! Hm.

Thanks for your replies. I use CS4.

Yes, It is not possible in Indesign to set the Relative Link.

But Acrobat supports Relative link, even though it only shows the absolute path. I checked it in the various locations. So I use Indesign to make web hyperlink, so that text covered in hyperlink will be absolutely covered in Adobe Acrobat. Then I change the weblink to File link in Adobe Acrobat and delete the web link. Since I found difficult drawing link box around wanted hyperlink text in Adobe Acrobat as it draws proportionally. 

As while creating it shows Absolute Path in Adobe Acrobat, It fine working with various locations in various machines and working as relative links. 

The Advantage is I use relative link only in the current working directory and its sub folders. I have not tested in the Parent of Parent Directory or beyond that.

Conclusion:

Most of us think wrong about Acrobat behavior of showing Absolute Path, But it is first searching for relative link only…

While doing search on the above hyperlink process, I found that Indesign always export hyperlinks with shared destination as Web links. For Example, if we choose "file link" in Indesign and select Shared Destination then, it will be treated as Web links.

File Links only works in Absolute Path when without selecting the Shared Destination. No Tweaking is possible there.

But Web Links with small tweaking in Acrobat we can achieve the relative links. While Choose file link in indesign choose the file and truncate the path based on the current working directory. For Example if the link files are located in "Link" folder then leave the path as "Link/index.pdf" … etc.

Indesign always append "file:" in front of the path while choosing "Shared Destination". Don't miss to Select Shared Destination.

Then we have to remove this "file:" in Acrobat using the link tool, thats it, now the exported PDF works as Relative Links.

But the resultant PDF will be opened as web links, that is pdf will be opened in default Browser pdfs.

In my project, I don't need web links and need only PDF links, so I delete the Web Links and Create the File Link in Acrobat itself with same relative path i.e., ("Link/index.pdf") mechanism, that it, it works in any locations or in any server with the same working directory placed.

I know ,,,you are in trouble..in this situation ..Try to check my given this adobe pdf link helper acroiehelpershim.dll link ..to find your answer..
