Greetings! I'm in the process of creating a 450-page book in InDesign CS5. The final product will be printed from the native ID file and also posted online. The online version has bookmarks, hyperlinks to pages within the body, URL hyperlinks, a TOC and Index, each with page links as one would expect. I have done tests using the Export Book to PDF function, saving it for Print so I can get all of the pages individually instead of the spreads that saving for Interactive gives us. So far, so good. The PDF works fine, TOC is fine, Index is functional, Bookmarks are in place. However, the file is 9.9 MB. I need to reduce that. I tried a number of combinations of settings in PDF optimizer, but all seem to remove any interactive functionality once the optimized file is saved. If anyone has had this issue come up and successfully resolved it, or has some tips on how to reduce the file size without losing the interactive functionality, I'd love to hear from you!! This file is large, even using Smallest File Size and setting the font subsetting to 100%. FYI, I am working on a file that was originated by someone else in CS4 two years ago, so it's possible there are some elements in these docs that I'm not aware are there. If I should be looking for any particular culprits that would produce such a large file, please let me know. The document is mostly text, with some vector icons repeated throughout, and only one bitmap graphic that I can think of.

Backup the file.

Save it as an InDesign Markup (IMDL) file.

Open in InDesign and save as an .indd file.


Hopefully that will work like the old .inx file method.

I used to use that in CS3 to strip out the junk from the file.

It would reduce the file size.

In the PDF optimisation – not sure if this makes a difference – can't test right now – but there is a "Clean Up" section, and there's two options pre-ticked for "Discard Invalid Links" and "Discard Invalid Bookmarks"

Yes, I've found it's best if I can get the export settings right the first time through, because the hyperlinks and bookmarks tend to get messed up in optimization. As for specific setting suggestions, I'm not sure I have anything you haven't already tried. Have you looked at the "Audit space usage." That might help direct what settings to fiddle with. You'll probably have to go pretty low with your image resolution to get the overall file size down.

9.9MB for a 450 page document sounds quite small, actually — unless there's some major concern about the filesize, I would leave it as-is. If the major concern about the filesize comes from someone else, I would try to educate them.


I work on graphically-heavy books, and they usually end up being about 10MB per 100 pages, with similar features to your title (bookmarks, hyperlinks, TOC, live layers). The export to PDF preset that I use is here: http://dirtywords.tv/2011/inde…..df-preset/


I do end up manipulating the files slightly in Acrobat after exporting, but I stay away from the Save As/PDF Optimizer settings, as they often introduce JPG2000 compression which doesn't render properly on iOS devices.
