paragraph styles not behaving

I have a paragraphs in different text boxes that use the same format: a persons name sometimes  followed by a hyphen then a phrase and then followed by a colon and the rest of the paragraph (s') text.

The name and the – phrase (paragraph styles name:  name ) is one font and the text following the : is in another Paragraph style name  ( paragraph styles name: body text).

I have made some overrides at differnt times. At one time I set up a nested style for text boxes.

Now I have a new style of font/size that I want  to change the 2 different parts in the text box.

I had trouble in changing the nested styles so I simply deleted it and substituted body text for the style. . I have updated the name and the body text paragraph style.

When I select the name info, and apply the ( name) paragraph, the entire text box shows up in the name style. When I only select the text after the :  and change it to the text paragraph style, the entire text name  and text  gets changed to the the paragraph style.

I  deleted the name text info,  copied the name info  into anotther text box, and applied the paragraph style -name to it. Then went back to the text box, selected the rest of the text, applied the text paragraph style. Then I added 3 spaces at the begining of the . Then I went back to the new text box with the applied name paragraph styleand copied/pasted the name info into the original text box. That worked. BUT

But if I want to change the paragraph style just the name for the whole document,it will not, and the change affects the entire  text boxes for the entire document.

What can i do to make the 2 different styles behave? How do I sepreste the text so the 2 styles can be applied tothe correct info?

thank you.

Long story, but it seems to me you are attempting to apply two paragraph styles to one single paragraph. Is that correct?

A second issue is that when  I apply one of my paragraph styles, the font is in grey and not the black colour that I have set the colour to be.

Help is appreacited.

Thanks

Uh, it seems you missed the sub-question in my question. How would it be possible to apply two paragraph styles to just a single paragraph? A paragraph style, by definition and by purpose, applies formatting to an entire paragraph. Applying "a second" paragraph style removes all formatting of the previous one and replaces it with its own.

You might want to take a look at character styles — now those are meant to be applied to parts of a paragraph.
