Step and Repeat

At the start of a new layout the first thing I like to do is make my crop, fold marks in my slug area. starting at 0,0 my first mark is drawn by hand. Now with this mark selected i choose edit/step and repeat to place my next mark, lets say 3 inches, away, horizontally inline with my first mark. When indd CS5 performs this task, it releases the new mark but with the original mark still selected. Not nice. Previous versions always "let go" of the original and the selection remained on the new mark allowing me to keyboard command step and repeat for the next mark, lets say .25 inches away. CS5 forces me to go back to the mouse and un-select the original and pick-up the newest mark. This is slowing me down and annoying the crap outta me. Is this a bug? or a new feature i can turn off? Cause I'd love to get my speed back up to normal.

i don't have an answer to the question posed, but there's an easier way to draw guidelines using a script. it can be found at:

go to ID_RulerGuide. watch the demo and if this is what you're after, download the script.

@ maryT, were you using CS2 before this?  Sandee Cohen wrote an answer to exactly the same question in the Indesign mag #20 about the new behaviour in CS3.  She wasn't able to provide a definite answer but it has something to do with the preview box, and if you tick it before or after selecting how many repeats you want.

Another method of doing this is to copy, paste in place (Ctrl + Shift + Alt + V) then enter  a + (or -) sign and the dimension needed in the appropriate X Y position box.

Not able to use the script because I'm not using the guides. These are registration/cut/fold marks that print with the job. They get trimmed off at finishing.

I do recall a glitch like this happening in a previous version. But I cant remember which suite it was 3 or 4? And I don't remember "fixing" it. I think it just went away with preferences from other layouts that I prepped for press.

I used "step and repeat" a lot in Indesign CS3. The original item was deselected by default. In CS5, it remains selected. I want to get rid of this. Is there a solution?

Kris, you'd have to take that one to Adobe: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

(I'd say it is not so much a bug, but rather an annoying and unnecessary change.)
