I have a 104-page catalog (including cover pages) made in InDesign (where else?) that the client wants to have on his iPad to take along on a business trip.
The client claims that the low-res PDF I sent previously loses all images when he transferred it to his iPad. With me not having an iPad to test on, I was hoping someone here could tell me the correct/preferred export settings to use for "PDF for iPad", or something to tell the client on how to transfer the PDF (I'm not ruling out he just messed up  ).

Apple's PDF support is sometimes a bit sketchy. I would try the flattest, oldest version of PDF (PDF 1.3).

PDF/X1-a might work. The main problem is almost certainly JPEG2000 image encoding, which is not supported on the iPad. When you make the PDF, make sure the encoding in the Compression pane is set to JPEG, not Automatic. That should (I think) do it.

I don't think I've ever met a jpg2000 in the wild. It really didn't make it onto anyone's radar, as far as I can tell; the Edsel of image formats.

There are a lot more JPEG2000 images out there than you'd think…. but they're mostly saved inside PDF files! Adobe knows how great JPEG2000 is (better quality at smaller file size), so it's part of PDF and Acrobat.
I've been pushing Adobe for years to get jpeg2000 export from Photoshop AND import into InDesign. It's a hard battle.

I sent him 2 PDF files; a PDF 1.4 (Acrobat 5) and a reduced version saved as Acrobat 9. If both won't work for him I'll try exporting with the image compression setting changed to JPEG.
Reducing the file size inside Acrobat Pro won't change the images' internal file types, right? I'd rather not send 30MB files too often.

I was able to borrow my brother-in-law's iPad today, and it seems the problem only comes when the PDF is reduced in file size in Acrobat Pro. I exported two PDFs using my offset-preset (PDF 1.3) one with image compression as Auto and one as JPEG and then reduced both, saving as new files.
The original exports both worked, but the reduced ones were image-less.
So now I just need to find a way to get good-looking PDFs out of InDesign that no longer need to be reduced in file size so they can be used on the web & iPads.

Roland, drop me an email to adam at adamjury dot com — I'll zap you the preset that I've been using for all the PDFs my company sells, which work very snappily on the iPad (even for 400-page full color books).
With that preset in hand, you should be able to massage things for filesize.
