We added a WordPress plugin to InDesignSecrets.com that lets you Tweet/Like/Email a link to the article you're reading without having to leave the article.

I saw they were using this on Mashable.com and thought it was some fancy custom programming … and then realized I had been seeing the same thing on other blogs for months.

Out of the box, the plug-in is about 3 miles high with buttons for Digg, StumbleUpon, and more, and about 2 pixels away from the article text We customized it for only the 3 services most of our audience uses already — Facebook, e-mail, and Twitter — and all the rest are available when you click the bottom catch-all "Share" link. And we changed the offset so it floats in the blue background, which I think is much less intrusive.

Anything that makes it easier for our readers to share good links with people is great for all of us, because it brings new eyeballs and (hopefully) their intelligent comment contributions to the party. But I know change can be off-putting, and if you never use FB/Twitter, it could be aggravating. Which we don't want. :D

What do you think?

Yeh I noticed that today. It's fine, it hangs out out there and isn't intrusive at all. I don't use twitter and I wouldn't normally post work related things to my facebook page, but that doesn't mean that others won't. I don't mind it at all.

Like Eugene I don't do those things either, but I think the email link is a good idea, usually when I'm having an issue it may also affect one or more of my co-workers, so being able to easily email the the links to them is a plus.

There seems to have been a change today. Instead of loading in the left margin, today when I came to this site, in the final stage of loading a page, the content slides down about a centimetre (or maybe a bit less) and the "Tweet, e-mail, Share" buttons appear in the space created just below the ad banner at the top of the page.

I think this looks neater than floating off in the left margin which, depending on how wide the viewer has set their browser window, may well be obscured.

Furry, it all depends on the width of the window. When the window gets less than 1000 px (if I recall), the widget becomes horizontal.

In response to a couple people objecting to how the floating tab can become partially hidden if the window is too narrow (and they don't want to widen the window manually); I changed the cutoff to 1150. That way the social links will appear in full on the left, or below the headline horizontally, period. No partial views.

I like them on the left since they look neater and they float as you scroll.
