Inconsistent Illustrator Image Contest Answer and Winner!
It’s time to reveal the solution—and the winner—for this month’s InDesignSecrets contest!
Here’s the scenario:
You open an InDesign file and notice that an Illustrator image of a spiderweb has been placed into the layout twice (on different pages).
You also notice the appearance of the Illustrator image is inconsistent. On the first page, there is a spider dangling from the web.
On the second page, the spider is gone.
This is the only image in the layout, there’s nothing else on either page, and the link is updated.
Why is the spider missing on the second page?
The answer is that the Illustrator file contains multiple layers, and the layer containing the spider was turned off on the second page of the InDesign document using Object > Object Layer Options.
You can also access Object Layer Options when placing an image by selecting Show Import Options in the Place dialog box (or Shift-clicking the Open button).

Yay! I got one right! And I even learned something — I didn’t know about the Object > Layer options bit. I had been editing the layers in Illustrator and then updating the link in ID. =)
You must carry the spider’s layer on web’s layer.
Or there could be 2 artboards in Illustrator, artboard 1 has web only the artboard 2 has both web and spider, then the image is placed with Show import options using page 1 (artboard 1) for page 1of InDesign and page 2 for page 2.
Bret is correct. However, in that scenario you will at least have a hint in the links palette, as the placement for the second art board will have a :2 appended to the link name.
Oh, good point – so my idea kinda works with the description but not the actual screenshot!
