The InDesign Conference Returns to Seattle
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love delving into history and those who prefer to focus on the present and future. (Of course, I don’t really believe that there are only two kinds of people, but it is such a convenient saying.)
My problem is that I am forever wanting to do both. Take, for example, our newest event, The InDesign Conference.
On the one hand, some of you already know the history of how I spoke at the first InDesign Conference ten years ago and ended up helping to run it in subsequent years. In 2008, I left that company and started PePcon with Anne-Marie. And over the next five years, PePcon grew to the point where we ended up acquiring the InDesign Conference, and immediately started plans for breathing new life into it.
That brings us to the present, and I’m so pleased to announce that The InDesign Conference is coming to Seattle, Washington, November 3–5! So, the “present” for us is filled with days of planning and organizing — our goal is to make the best InDesign event ever, and I think we’re doing it!
First, the speakers are amazing: Bob Bringhurst, Diane Burns, Chad Chelius, Erik Christopher, Sandee Cohen, Anne-Marie Concepcion, Erica Gamet, Keith Gilbert, Michael Ninness, Mike Rankin, Russell Viers… (and yes, I’m presenting, too.)
In a perfect world, we’d have all our great contributors there (yeah, you know who you are!), but jeez, this is just the first time we’ve ever produced this event. We have to start somewhere, and what a place to start!
Next, the sessions they’re presenting are amazing, too, including topics like:
- accessibility
- HTML5 export
- managing InDesign in workgroups
- fixed-layout EPUB
- DPS
- styles
- grep
- typography
- troubleshooting
- database publishing
- and more…
The main conference is two days, chock full o’ great sessions at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center. This place is beautiful — it’s right on the Seattle waterfront, within walking distance of the Aquarium, the piers, and the world famous Pike Place Market. Then, Gold Pass attendees also get a third, full day of in-depth tutorials (you can choose either the EPUB or DPS track).
I need to be clear here: We have a lot of room for the first two days, but the Gold Passes (with the third day) are very limited! That’s because day three is at Adobe’s Seattle headquarters! That’s right: inside the building where Adobe InDesign was born. We have space for only about 50 people in each room, so we are only offering 100 of these Gold Pass registrations.

Wish I could swing the $800 that close to the holidays. Maybe you guys should go with a subscription model? One panel a month for $50? :D

Brock: If it were just a training, I might agree with you. After all, I do plenty of this in my lynda.com courses. But if you’ve ever been to one of our conferences, you’ll know that it’s a lot more than just learning stuff you can learn in a video or from a book. I hope you can join us!
