I think you dropped the ball on part of the autoflow discussion.
Those of us that actually add art (photos, tables, figures) after flowing text would love to have some sort of buit-in autoflow feature in ID that works similar to XPress’ auto text box, adding pages as needed when text is pushed forward in the document.
I’m so glad there are plug-ins available, namely AutoFlow, EasyFlow, and InFlow, to mimic this XPress feature.
Brad
I have had to change a Master Page item on every page through a document recently. I set up the Master Pages with the alphabet down the outer margin for a primary dictionary. So at the top of the text box is Aa, then underneath that in the next paragraph is Bb, then Cc and so on all the way down through the letters of the alphabet. There was a page for words beginning with A facing a page with words beginning with B.
On each page in the document I used command-shift-click to release the text box of letters down the outer margin so that I could change the character style of the letter for that page. There was also a highlighting graphic that slid in behind the letter for that page which I had to release so I could move it down behind the appropriate letter.
I don’t know how else I could have changed the formatting for only A on the A page and only B on the B page without overriding the master page item on each page, individually. Likewise the graphic which I had to move to sit behind the right letter for that page.
I couldn’t have used the Place command for this purpose.
I suppose I could have copied and pasted the text box and graphic and then moved them, but it seemed easier to make them Master Page items and just override them on each page. I must admit I looked for a function in the Master Pages to “always override this Master Page item” or something similar.
I didn’t want to do it for all the items on the spread, just these two items.
Surely this is a case for always overriding the Master Page convenience?
Anyway, as you can imagine it was a rather short document, so it wasn’t much of a problem.
Cathy, you’re right. That is a reasonable way to use master pages. Thanks for sharing!
Brad, you get to be right, too! A way to automatically flow from one text frame to another when you edit text is definitely missing from the program. I hope Adobe is reading!
