InDesignSecrets Videocast #2: Saving Time with the Links Panel

Spend 14 minutes watching this videocast about InDesign CS4’s new Links panel and you will save yourself hours of work! The Links panel has taken a huge leap forward in functionality in CS4, but the changes aren’t immediately obvious. This is the second of six videocasts in which we’re talking about some of our favorite time-saving features in InDesign CS4.

You can watch the videocast by clicking on the video below, or — if you want a larger version of it — go directly to our channel at indesignsecrets.blip.tv. These videos will also soon be available on Adobe.tv (we’ll update this or post a comment below when that happens). Alternatively, you can watch (or even subscribe) to the video podcast on iTunes with this link.

About that Mac-only trick at the end. You would be able to do the same thing on Windows Vista and newer if only Adobe had implemented the new Windows Vista file dialogs – but apparently they thought Windows users should be less productive so they still use XP-era dialogs on Vista, which is a shame. I sure do hope they fix this bug for CS5

Just installed CS4 yesterday. The info from this videocast will protect the rest of my hair. Being able to sort by so many properties and have so much info available (or not) has my fingers twitching and ready to go. Keep the tips coming. You two are great…as are my fellow subscribers to the best site on the web!

AM – Your “new in IDCS4″ videos on Lynda have me hopping ready to go.

    Thanks!

This was excellent. As I was “watching,” I kept bringing up ID and playing with the links panel while you two were talking in the background. Thank you. Keep those videos coming.

More proof, if needed, that video rules audio — for all things pertaining to graphics apps! A fine videocast, please keep ‘em coming.

I agree that video rules audio — but I find it a bit tricky when driving!

I’m something of a layer fiend, so rather than seeing folders in the links panel, I have the layer showing. I just can’t stand having an image on my text layer or vice versa, and going page by page through a catalog turning layers on and off is too much hassle, so checking the links panel once is easier :)

    Great video again.

Oh, and I believe Asbjørn Riis-Knudsen is right, although I don’t use Vista here at home and thus can’t be 100% sure, but Adobe should patch the dialogs for Vista users.

Oh by the way, is there an easy way to expand all the links that’ve been placed more than once, and does anyone know of a script that lets me move linked files (based on file type) to a certain layer?
It’d be a real time saver if I could say, for example, all PSD files should go to the “images” layer, or that all AI files should go to the “vectors” layer.

I find you never stop learning about InDesign and having you two come up with another new tip makes me more proficient in doing my layouts.

    Thanks
