HELP!
How can I get my Indesign file to open. It just reads Error 5.
Did any of the above find out how? I see the dates are far back but still obviously the problem is still happening.

Thank you.

Well, it finally happened. After working on large documents for 10 years, I finally had a book designed in CS4 with 15 chapters become corrupt... at 1 am the night before it went to the printer. This was a very high-profile report to Congress that a team of 20+ people had worked on for about a month.

I got the Error code 5 message, your files are corrupt and cannot be recovered. We had backup files but they were 2 days old (don't know what happened w/the IT dept there). So we had to edit a 4-hour-old pdf and print from that. I haven't been able to find much info on the Error Code 5 message... does anyone know what causes it?

I just submitted a corrupted file to the email address listed above, although i have never seen an email address like that before, so i hope it got there.

Yesterday worked on this file and now it is corrupt and won't open... error 5.

All I did was take an old file and resize all the graphics to fit a new page size. Grouped everything and enlarged.... maybe there is a bug in the resizing ....

Maybe markzware can fix this file for me....

I just finished a project today when suddenly the electricity went off. After I re-booted, my InDesign file would not open at all. (I got "Error Code: 5" for a while, but finally it just said it couldn't open the file. Period.) I tried everything suggested in Adobe's help files and in every online forum I could find.

I finally had to give up and recreate the file from an earlier saved copy. One thing helped: I could see the corrupt file in Bridge — not just the icon — I could see page 1 perfectly in the preview pane of Bridge! This was a huge help to me in recreating the file since I hadn't printed out a copy before I lost it. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to get Bridge to show any other page besides the first one.

I thought I'd share this with you, even though it's long after this post was published, in case it helps someone else someday. I did send the corrupt file to Markzware, whose blog said they're still collecting them this month.

I haven't had totally corrupted files in years, but just a few days ago something started to happen. An indd file started crashing the app every 5 minutes or so. It is a file with lots of tables and text. No images. If I styled only text, it was OK. If I styled the tables, same thing.
But whenever I tried to style text and then a table within the text, hang and crash!
I resolved the issue by styling the tables first and then save as with a new name. After that I styled the text taking about 16 crashes along the way.
Still got the job done, though.

Anyone else get this?

The problem occurred on both Mac and Windows versions and on three different machines with lots of RAM.

The book has another similar 60-page section. I dread tomorrow, when I have to start working with it.

The Horror, the horror...

I'll agree with Klaus. I don't think in using InDesign since it's earliest version, I've ever created a file for me that I couldn't open.

I hope I will still find some, just happend recently. We get an error 500 when the disk is full. The problem is that ID tries to auto-save, but no disk space is left. And don’t blame me, it’s our graphic designers who deny to learn while our it guys struggle with the new server ... ;-D
