Page Numbering Gallery
Bob Bringhurst, our bff for doing such an incredible job of making the InDesign (and InCopy) online help files as helpful and accurate as possible, has created another useful resource on his blog.
Go to his Page Numbering Gallery to see illustrated how-tos for all the different kinds of page numbering that people need to do in InDesign. As he says in the post, “I kept thinking that what people really needed was pictures of page numbering effects and brief descriptions of how to create those effects. So that’s what I’m doing here.”
It’s pretty straightforward, just example after example with a screen shot, a very brief overview, and a link to the appropriate pages in online help:
I notice that Bob created a new category in his blog called Feature Galleries, and so far this is the only article in the category. But at the end of it, he asks his audience to request additional feature galleries … what a great idea! Be sure to send him your requests (bbringhu at adobe dot com) or just write them below, as I’m sure if Bob is swamped, we can help out here!

I am using InDesign to create our company’s catalog and throughout the book there are areas where we say ” for more information, please see page xx” Is there a way to place a marker so that when page XX moves, the original reference updates to the correct page?
Hi Neal, if you’re in CS4 you can use the built-in cross-references feature for that. Instead of typing out “page XX” you’d click your Type cursor at that location and choose Type > Hyperlinks & Cross-References > Insert Cross Reference. Then in the x-ref dialog box choose the text that’s on page XX that you want to reference, and the x-ref format from the drop-down menu. When the text on page XX gets moved to another page, the x-ref you inserted updates to show the correct page.
If you’re not on CS4 then there are a few scripts or plug-ins around that add x-ref features to ID.
