PR: Markzware PageZephyr Allows Searching and Converting in InDesign Files

Press Release:
Markzware Pagezephyr Makes Converting And Searching Content In Proprietary File Types A Breeze

Enables Users to Take Control of Data with New Desktop Search and Content Extraction

SANTA ANA, California — December 3, 2009 — Markzware, developer of FlightCheck® and inventor of preflighting, today released PageZephyr(tm), a content search and extraction engine. PageZephyr has been developed using Markzware’s Common Reader Architecture (CRA), the high-performance technology at the heart of Markzware’s current and future products.

Benefits and Features of PageZephyr:

PageZephyr technology makes it possible to search proprietary documents, and then takes that to a higher level allowing users to examine and extract text from the most popular publishing native file formats, such as Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, and soon Microsoft Publisher, PageMaker and other document types. Content-intense professions that specialize in managing, locating and re-using large volumes of specific data will substantially benefit. PageZephyr is especially valuable to businesses such as: advertising, publishing and printing, manufacturing, finance, legal (e-discovery / e-forensics), information and governmental agencies.

How PageZephyr Works:

PageZephyr is the first and only solution that indexes, locates and outputs content created from proprietary or encoded formats without the need for the original authoring application. The release version of PageZephyr is compatible with .indd (Adobe InDesign CS through CS4), and .qxp (QuarkXPress versions 6 through 8 ) files. In addition, PageZephyr’s index extension capabilities can extend indexing to both attached volumes and networked volumes, to include “the enterprise.”

According to DCLnews “The fact is, if 30% of an organization’s content was found to be reusable, that would mean a reduction of 30% in the cost of maintaining the documents.” PageZephyr is a tool that helps to increase the value of original, legacy content, bridging the print world to the internet world. Print production firms offering services that include handling digital data for their customers will particularly benefit from PageZephyr.

Applications:

PageZephyr increases productivity while lowering costs and completely eliminates expensive and time-consuming, labor-intensive processes, including:

  • Rewriting the original content;
  • Creating searchable PDF files;
  • Exporting searchable XML;
  • Retyping paper documents by hand;
  • Scanning paper documents with Optical Character Recognition (OCR);
  • Owning the original application that created the file containing proprietary content.

PageZephyr allows searching of content through user-selected keywords and key phrases. Operationally, PageZephyr first identifies the searched terms throughout various “stories” located within a document and can search documents by file size, modification date or creation date. Keywords and key phrases are highlighted. The results of the query also include the context of the keyword or key phrase within a specific story.

Furthermore, content searching may be performed in any language. After selecting the story, its text will be displayed in a “story board,” for viewing, editing and exporting to formatted RTF, Plain Text or distributing to PageZephyr.com. PageZephyr.com provides a collaborative environment for users to share, edit and market their content.

Markzware Insight

Patrick Marchese, President of Markzware, says “In light of today’s economic challenges, PageZephyr offers a new content strategy for companies trying to streamline the publishing process and reduce costs. It is estimated that there are more than five billion QuarkXPress documents created before 2006. One would think there are at least that many InDesign documents. PageZephyr can “recycle content” from InDesign, Quark and other proprietary document types, lowering content management and production costs.”

Marchese continues, “Today, more than ever, original and relevant content is critical for business intelligence and for marketing. PageZephyr adds value to the businesses’ content derived from proprietary files without the burden of owning expensive authoring applications. These days, data control and preservation regulations require corporations be able to (at a moment’s notice) access and capture content. Just ask HSBC, as they were recently fined several million dollars for losing customer data.”

Availability and Compatibility

Markzware invites companies interested in private labeling or licensing Markzware’s PageZephyr technology or the Markzware Common Reader Architecture (CRA) to contact bizdev @ markzware.com or call 1-800-300-3532.

PageZephyr runs on Macintosh platforms, with versions for Windows platforms currently planned for future release.

A 10-day fully functional version can be downloaded for FREE. Two versions are available for sale: $129 for search only and $299 for both content search and extraction.

    Does anyone know if this will search InCopy files? If it does, it would be worth it’s weight in gold.

  • Good suggestion Eric, I will throw this into the development group at Markzware and see what we can do… Can you email me a couple sample files please? (david AT markzware D O T nl)

    PageZephyr will however search closed .INDD files, which is already an awesome function, in and of itself.

  • Eugene Tyson says:

    I’m slightly confused on how this works?

    Say if I have 20 InDesign files, and I have them all in one folder.

    Can I, for want of a better term, basically extract all the text to separate files and as Text files, like RTF?

    Sorry if it seems like a simple or stupid question, just a little confused on how it works?

  • Johan says:

    What about ventura (they still exist) and framemaker files?

    If it does read those files, it would be really awesome.

    Great application anyway.

  • Thanks Johan. Yes, FrameMaker is on the request list, for sure. Ventura not yet, but this is the feedback we need.

    Hi Eugene, Yes, that is 100% correct. The extraction at this moment goes to a free WordPress blog page you set-up via https://pagezephyr.com
    Once there, you can copy this text, with styles and all, into an RTF file, for instance with ease.

    The main features today are the search and extraction. You can also open the native file from within PageZephyr, once you find something you need… You can try the demo here: https://bit.ly/6cvEH0

  • Hi Eugene,
    The full version of PageZephyr ($299) allows you to export the found content to a .rtf or .txt file without needing to create a WordPress blog.
    Patrick

  • Eugene says:

    That seems like something I will defintely need. Thanks for that.

  • Nope…sorry…I still don’t get it…

    So people who don’t have the Native software can reuse the content from these files?

    How are they to know it has picked up everything?

    How does it handle multiple columns, equations, margin notes, Images, footnotes/endnote etc etc…
