Real World InDesign CS5 Off to Press

rwidcs5cover_small.png

People have long told me that they consider the book Real World InDesign to be the “bible” of InDesign… I always wince slightly as there is another book that technically calls itself the bible for InDesign. (Not to mention the other biblical books from one wisdom tradition or another. After all, I’m the co-author of Judaism for Dummies, but I’m currently reading the Baghadvad Gita and I have about 8 different “bibles” on my shelves. But I digress. A lot.)

So, given the number of emails I’ve received from people over the past few months asking about the release of Real World InDesign CS5, I’m very pleased to announce that it’s finally about to head to press. In fact, I just now received the just-about-final cover proof (see above). Snazzy!

Of course, if you can’t wait, much of the book is already available at CreativeEdge.com as a “Rough Cut”! The formatting of these “rough cuts” is not the same as the final printed book, but it’s not terrible.

Note that Ole and I have a brand new co-author on this edition: Bob Bringhurst. Many of you know Bob’s work already: He has been the lead documentation writer on InDesign since the beginning! He also has a great blog at Adobe.com. It was an absolute pleasure working with Bob, who is knowledgeable, creative, and a great writer and editor.

Real World InDesign CS5 is currently available for pre-order at Amazon USA, your local bookstore, and elsewhere! (Older editions can be found there, too, of course, or at my friend Glenn’s price comparison site: isbn.nu)

For other books recommendations, check out our Books and Videos page (which sorely needs updating, I admit).

Enjoy!

Thanks, David. The Real World books for InDesign and Illustrator are always excellent, and are the only ones I will invest in (and recommend to friends and students).

Did you consider making an e-book out of it? And if yes, why did you decide not to?

@Fred: Peachpit Press does make Real World InDesign available as a Kindle book, as a PDF, and in the CreativeEdge.com (Safari Books) subscription web site. I believe they are working with the Apple iBookstore, too, but I’m not sure what the status of that is.

Of course, many people still like having the heft of a real book on hand. The index in the printed book is awesome (award winning!) but I can see how the quick search of a PDF could be really helpful sometimes.

Congratulations on the new CS5 edition of Real World. That’s fantastic.

Is it in 4-color this time? I know that Real World Illustrator CS4 by Mordy was. Hoping that yours is, too. If not, that’s OK. But I’m getting spoiled with so many recent publications offering full color.

Thanks for all you and Anne-Marie do for the InDesign community.

David, that is great news. RWID is much better than the other thingy. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the difference is similar to the difference between “King James” and “Good News” but the difference is great.

I always love your writing in all its many flavors. Thanks for getting this reference to us.

How much space is dedicated to the interactivity features?

I just received a notification from Amazon.com that my pre-order of Real World InDesign CS5 won’t be available until September.

Olav Martin Kvern, et al “Real World Adobe InDesign CS5.” Estimated arrival date: September 01 2010 – September 08 2010.

Sorry to hear that! I guess that happens sometimes.

Looking forward to receiving my copy.

@Marc: Well, fortunately in this case Amazon is wrong. It is rolling out of the bindery August 12. I’m hoping people will have it on their desk by end of the month.
