The InDesigner – Episode 32: Preset Expectations

It’s the one-year anniversary of The InDesigner podcast — a year that has exceeded all my preset expectations. This episode both looks back on the past year and presents an in-depth video look at the very first tip I gave in the very first audio episode one year ago — taking advantage of Presets. From Document setup to Print settings to PDF export options, I show how to create, edit, and share presets that will eliminate repetitive tasks and save you time every time you use InDesign. Also, the winner of the anniversary contest is announced.

Another great Podcast Michael. It’s good to see more of the management/technical side of InDesign. Thanks for the shout out too. You’ve done very well, congrats man.

    Michael,

    Congratulations on your anniversary!

Ever since Adobe introduced document presets, I’ve been nagging them that the File/Document Presets submenu should just go right ahead and create a document based on the chosen preset rather than take you to the New document.

Think about it: why would anybody trog all the way down to the submenu when you can just as easily choose New Document and then use the drop-down in the dialog?

I guess I just console myself by boycotting that Document Presets sub-menu. But if it did take me directly to a document, I’d probably use it quite a lot.

    Dave

Congratulations ! Ever since I first spotted this site I keep coming back for more!
@Dave, while we’re at it: When I choose a new document why not let me choose a different ICC CMYK profile? Just like P’shop. It’s just plain stupid to have to change your preferences every time…

Wondering what the trick is to actually see video from these pages. I’m just getting audio so far. Do I have to install iTunes?

For Bruce and others. You do not need iTunes but you might need to find another player. One good free player can be obtained (via the Web): VLC Media Player works very well in my opinion and plays video clips that other players don’t seem to accept. At least for a Windows platform. Try it and see. There are other players too that should work.

Keep it up, thisis the most productive way to wait for the RIP to produce it’s plotters these podcasts. The way you explain things help me explain to my customers… just wish I had time and energy to translate them to Swedish.
Will you get into scripting… or do you recomend another source.

Thanks, Lukas…and while I’m at it, a belated thanks to everyone who took the time to post congratulations on my anniversary.

As to your specific question, Lukas…scripting scares me! I get it in concept, but in execution, there are far smarter and more capable people out there than me. The absolute master, from my experience, is Dave Saunders, a frequent comment poster here on InDesignSecrets.com.

Thanks for the plug on your debate of making PDF’s and how to find a savvy printer!!…I’ve been with Sells for 20 years and enjoy working with James Wamser – he mentions you often.
I have bookmarked this site and will encourage more of my clients to check in with you and your knowledge.

Bruce, installing iTunes is probably the best way to get these video-casts. To see the video, you will need something that is compatible with the MP4 files that Michael provides. I don’t know what non-Apple software will play them. The latest Quicktime player for Windows will play them.
