This Month in InDesign Articles, August 2016
You can build a lot of things with InDesign… newsletters, books, ads, interactive documents… but the one thing you cannot build is a wall. Because InDesign is all about connecting people together, and that’s what we’re trying to do here at InDesignSecrets: connect you with other people who have great ideas (see list below), and help you connect better with your audience by using these tools more efficiently.
InDesign articles for August 2016
- Confused about all the different options for publishing digitally from InDesign? Check out this great free 17-page PDF that Keith Gilbert and Justin Putney wrote! (Of course, it is slightly biased toward HTML5 using in5, but there’s still great info in there.)
- Erica Gamet has a nice video about when to use character styles vs. paragraph styles. Important!
- This is a beautiful wedding invitation, using laser cut paper (though they never say how to do the laser-cutting!)
- Love type? This video of a master engraver cutting a punch in the 1950s is amazing. (Cutting a punch, not throwing one!)
- The one caught my eye: Extensis and Typefi are working together to streamline font management in automated publishing
- If you’re into GREP, this expression to find palindromes is amazing (but almost entirely useless).
- Are you interested in developing Creative Cloud Extensions for InDesign or Photoshop? Check out this article about CEP (HTML) Panels.
- Ever needed to draw a spiral in InDesign? Now you can let a free script do it for you!
- Alan Gilbertson is starting a new series of articles on preparing a manuscript for publishing. Good stuff!
- For the font lovers among us, this font that changes throughout the day is lovely
- Speaking of fonts, did you see this article about Monotype’s excellent font subscription system?
- Do you need to place an alias (shortcut) of an image rather than the original file on a Mac? There are problems, outlined in this forum thread. But John Hawkinson came up with a (very technical) workaround here.
- Diane Burns created a five-minute lesson on how to make a one-page newsletter for Adobe
- Ever wanted to be a Lynda.com instructor? So fun to see Mark Nieman Ross and Justin Seeley and others in this fun movie about becoming a LDC author.
Hey, did I mention that The InDesign Conference is coming up? November 7–9 just outside of Washington DC! Here’s a little video from our past couple of events (created by the wonderful Erica Gamet) to get you inspired:
Hope we’ll see you there. Enjoy!
David,
Great articles, again, this month!
BTW, I signed up for the free Digital Publishing Technology Guide co-authored by Keith Gilbert and Justin Putney – what a gem!
Many thanks.
