This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 106
Hey, it’s not too late to sign up for PEPCON, no matter where in the world you are. Last week we received registrations from Auckland and Belgium! If you need an extra nudge of convincing, here are some blog pieces people have written about it:
- Kellly Vaughn: The Top Eight Reasons You Should Attend the Print and ePublishing Conference
- Colleen Cunningham: Real-World Skills Are Yours at PePcon 2013
- Justin Seeley: I’m Speaking at PEPCon 2013 in Austin, TX!
Meanwhile, here are some InDesign-related articles and links you need to know about:
- This is a good one: InDesign tricks from ‘HerGeekness’ : cleaning up those nasty MS Word files in InDesign
- Need to copy all the fonts from a document into a folder? You could use the File > Package feature, but that grabs your graphics and InDesign file, too. Here’s a script that will just collect your fonts for you!
- Cari Jansen wrote up a nice article called: InDesign: Facing pages with odd-numbered left pages
- I love watching Mike Rankin’s InDesign FX movies because they show that almost anything is possible in this program! Here are a few free ones you should check out:
- Making graphs in InDesign is rarely easy, but here are a couple of tricks you should remember. Note that the tutorial is in French, though you can see an English translation of it here.
- Need to get HTML5 out of InDesign? Check out In5, with a new update!
- Keith Gilbert pointed out that Apple made some major changes in their user interface of the Developer Member Center, which may cause confusion when uploading DPS apps.
- Remember boxes of software? I can’t decide whether I’m happy or sad that Adobe plans to halt boxed sales of Creative Suite software.
- Here’s a great demo of how to build a herringbone pattern in InDesign
Design and Production Links
- I love reading John Berry talk about type and typography. Here’s one from The Magazine, now edited by my friend Glenn Fleishman: Unbound Pages: Text has leaped free of physical constraints, but designers still trail.
- I’m just kind of marveling at this one: 3D Printing from Photoshop
- If you’ve been in the business a while, you probably recall Efi Arazi, the founder of EFI. I was sad to see in the Seybold report that Efi passed away last week.
- Should you put a comma at the end of a list? The Best Shots Fired in the Oxford Comma Wars
- Should you use a QR code? I like them, actually, but I have to say that this flowchart made me LOL
Enjoy!
Thanks for the list!
The In5 looks great – I tried the demo and it works ok, but it uses PNG and the demo doesn’t allow live text in the export – which is a pity – would love to see the text working in the layout as text.
Anyone using it that can let me know how they are getting on with it?
RE: Adobe halting boxed software Sales – That story is still only being reported by a pair of websites who appear to be quoting the same “inside source” at Adobe. Without a statement publicly from Adobe, I remain skeptical.
