This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 27
Um, so did anyone miss the news that Adobe is releasing InDesign CS5 soon? It would be virtually impossible not to know, as every site and twitter feed seems to have lit up with excitement about it. Here’s a bunch of articles, videos, and whatnot — some discussing CS5, and others exploring features in the versions of InDesign that we all currently have:
Links to CS3 and CS4 posts:
- Let’s start with a tutorial that works in CS4: Using InDesign to Create a Designer Resume. It’s a simple step by step, but with pretty nice results.
- Ilene Strizver discusses using baseline shift and lining numerals to make type around numbers look nicer.
- Want to break up a PSD file that has a shadow on a different layer? Check out this free script called shadowmatic from the good folks at Premedia.
- I am mucho excited that Tim Cole (now of Kuhnert) is blogging again. You can find him here, talking about a great new plug-in called MultiFindChange. The only problem is that the multifindchange is not widely available at this time. But check it out anyway! You’re going to want it!
- If you’re a Cross-References Pro user, or you’re thinking about becoming one, check out this set of new scripts that help you make tables of contents, and more.
- Thanks to Chuck Green for pointing out that creativepro has made available this great little article by Steve Werner about how to make print-ready InDesign files (it’s a PDF file).
- Our friend Cari Jansen is back with a great blog post about using the preflight feature to find overset text.
- Wow! The new version of Formatting Tools from In-Tools.com can convert URLs to hyperlinks and convert text to title case based on paragraph or character style (far more intelligently than InDesign’s built-in Change Case feature).
CS5 links:
- Of course, we should start out with our own blog post about InDesign CS5, and another about where to find free videos about the new version.
- Then let’s move on to a glowing review of InDesign CS5 from PC Magazine by Matthew Murray. Wow! Congrats to the Adobe team! Of course, I should also point out that reviewing a product before it actually ships is rarely a good idea. But we’ll ignore that this time.
- Do you think you’re going to upgrade to CS5? Look at this fascinating data on some InDesign users’ responses, courtesy of Markzware.
- Jeremy Schultz shares his first impressions of CS5 for Designorati
- Here’s another InDesign CS5 article, from Digital Arts, that is flashy (no pun in intended).
- Hey, it’s Tim Cole again! This time, with an 8-minute movie about split and span columns.
- Michael Murphy also weighs in on CS5, with 36 minutes of video showing the features in action (and a very cute toddler).
Well, if that’s not enough coverage, I don’t know what is! Have fun, and Happy InDesigning!
Thanks for the links – lot’s of reading to do now and watching videos :D
Just saw another thing this morning – pretty neato https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAELj3n2QMM
Hey look InDesign CS5 Help is live

Yeah Eugene, I just found that too.
You can get to all the CS5 apps’ online help files by going to the main Creative Suite 5 Online Help page, which links to each one (plus had general CS5 help topics):

I’ve been reading up on stuff all day. Trying to familiarise myself with functionality while I wait for the software to be delivered :D
I’ve printed out the help file and I’m reading about the new stuff during my lunch breaks. I think I have about a month to get up-to-speed.
You know what I find fascinating? Just about every big store has their ad folders on their site in that “cool” Flash format where you can flip the pages. Nobody ever mentioned that you can do that straight from inside InDesign by exporting to Flash.
Personally, I’d rather download a PDF, but I’ve had two clients ask me if I could do that for them using their catalogs, and ? since I didn’t know better ? I told them they’d have to ask their web developers to do it.
If it wasn’t for CS5’s new Flash export options, I wouldn’t have thought to check those in CS4 and never would’ve known. Now I have one less reason to upgrade… although that’s not a good thing, as I really want to upgrade, despite the ?649 excl. 19% VAT upgrade cost.
Ilene Strizver discusses using baseline shift and lining numerals to make type around numbers look nicer.
— now that is a prime job for a GREP style. Apply a character style with an appropriate baseline shift to “(?<=\d)-(?=\d)". Tha's all.
I’m so excited I can’t stand it. Are there ANY betas or previews or ANYTHING we can download now for ID5?
Oh – and Anne Marie — have been watching your ID5 video tutorial at lynda.com. Way to go — great job!
