In most layouts, typography is the base, the rock, the foundation on which all else is built. Here are ten type tips—really more suggestions for best practice—that will help elevate your typography and by extension, your whole designs. These tips are rooted in print typography, but most are equally applicable to screen. Some are preventative, some cosmetic; some will cause a huge difference, others facilitate subtle improvements. There’s no hierarchy—they are all equally important, and I’ve just listed them as I thought of them.

    Thanks Nigel for you number 1 point about Metrics and Optical Kerning, it was a bit confused to me to state (and teach btw) when it comes in handy to use optical kerning and you really shed a helping light on that issue.
