I want to be able to add a “check box” before an automatic numbered list paragraph style. How do I do this?

I’m not sure about putting a checkbox before the number, but you can somewhat add it after the paragraph number using a wingdings font letter q, r, o, or p. Create a new character style with wingdings set as the font family. in the numbered list paragraph style set a nested style of your wingdings character style through 1 letter. Each time you have a new paragraph you will need to start it with one of those characters.

There may be a better and easier way to do this, but I don’t know it. Maybe someone could use this as a base to better achieve the result you want.

The best way that I could come up with is by faking it with two square brackets — an opening square bracket followed immediately by a closing square bracket.

You can set this up automatically without having to type it in manually in every paragraph by going to Paragraph Style Options > Bullets and Numbering then in the Numbering Style section you’ll see a Number: pane with the following string as the default (unless it was changed, of course): ^#.^t. Just change that string with this: [] ^#.^t.

That’s the best way I can think off.

      Cool idea to use brackets.
Another idea might be to use a custom font that has both numbers and a square box.

Or (this is crazy, but it works) you could fake a square by applying a rule above and a rule below to the paragraph, and set the positioning and thickness of the rules so that one “knocks out” the other, except for an outline of a square in the proper location.
