      Hi Community

I have an old InDesign file for a print book which I am preparing to convert to Kindle format. When the book was first designed, the endnotes were produced in a ‘dumb’ way: ie, a section of endnotes was laid out at the back of the book, and a superscript reference for each endnote was inserted at the right place in the run of text in the body of the book. No link was built between the two.

Now I’m creating a Kindle book I want to link the note references with the endnote content. I understand Kindle doesn’t yet support popup note windows, but my thinking is that they may well in future, and therefore my best course is to build cross references between each superscript number in the book’s text and its related endnote, and then output to epub3 with the note popup option selected. It’s laborious, but the book is worth it.

Would anyone reading this approach the task differently, or do you agree with my approach? Also, can anybody advise how Kindle treats files with the popup note window selected — does it degrade to a list of notes at the back?

Correction: Further to the above – I shouldn’t have used the term “cross references” given that it has a specific meaning in InDesign. What I actually meant was that I would need to manually create footnotes throughout the book by finding all current superscript references and then copying and pasting from the existing endnotes the corresponding footnote for each one. Once completed I can output a reflowable epub with either the popup notes or endnotes option selected.

      Hi Chris,
I am facing this same situation and looking for solutions. I’ve looked at many options including some of Peter’s wonderful scripts. But I’ve now come back to this as the most likely solution given I am working with a multi-file InDesign Book. Any wisdom to share after the fact? If you even remember the project 2 years later.

      Hi Alex

I’m sorry, but no. I believe I took the laborious manual route, having failed to find anything which could automate the process. Think of it as a great opportunity to listen to the complete works of J S Bach as you connect your endnotes to the text!

Yes, I’ve been coming to the same conclusion. Thanks Chris!
