There is probably a simple answer to this but I have been unable to track it down yet. InDesign CS6 on a Mac.
Is there some way I can print or make a .pdf of a document with coloured elements in it (alternating backgrounds in a table, for example) so that the result is in grey-scale? Do I need to go through the InDesign document and convert everything in it to grey? Seems grossly inefficient. There must be an easier way. -

There is probably a few ways to get there, but for printing in BW from a color document select “Print” from the “File” menu then in the dialog box select the “Output” option on the left and in the “Color” pop-up menu select “Composite Gray”.
You could also print a PosScript file using this and end up with a BW document that can be converted to PDF.
There is also the “Export” feature in the file menu where you can save a JPEG and self the “Color Space” Gray in the pop-up menu.Just a few options

Thank you David, Andre (and Steve Werner). I have learned a lot in just a few minutes. I have tried both Steve’s method and Andre’s method and achieved success both times. It’s odd how features can be invisible in plain site — you see them all the time but they somehow never register in your conscioiusness.
Thank you all three.

I must say thank you for sharing this information. I’m trying to sharpen up on my InDesign skills. I’ve been using Photoshop and Illustrator for years but not so much InDesign.
Thanks again
