There is something seriously wrong with the people at Adobe. I have been fighting with Indesign for about 2 weeks now and it just gets worse with each passing day.
So now while trying to manage and arrange the pages in this document I discover that no matter what I do it keeps resetting to….
“Allow Document Pages to Shuffle” and
“Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle”Too the checked condition. What could possibly be the reason for making this the default setting?
I’m beginning to understand that this is a pointless question but I have to ask. Is it possible to make these two selections unchecked permanently, i.e. disable them? -

It occurs to me that I may have the wrong idea about this setting. While watching various videos on using Indesign one presenter made a point of noting that these two options be unchecked, and I got the impression that Indesign was prone to randomly shuffling the documents for its own reasons. However while I’m posting this question it occurs to me that perhaps this option only means that “I” can shuffle the page as I wish. Generally speaking the word “Shuffle” brings to mind actions found on IPODs and other mp3 players. Not necessarily the ability for me to arrange the pages in my document.
Indesign already does enough screwball stuff without adding something like this to the list.

Yes only you can shuffle the document pages.
It’s useful if you want to butt two pages together, turn off Allow Pages Shuffle – then you can drag one page up beside another page and it butts them together
Particularly useful in 6pp flyers, or something with a fold out.
Or just to create a saddle stitch cover, or even a cover with a spine.

Hi Ron,
Sorry things have been so frustrating for you. IMHO, InDesign is solid and Adobe pretty good to deal with (if a little graspy for your wallet). I’ve certainly encountered frustration in front of the computer but mostly when Word is open. Rare though it is. Glad you got it “sorted” out

First let me say thank you for your reply. As I noted in my follow up post the language threw me . Shuffle makes me think of what an mp3 player does as in auto shuffle. Kind of get’s my thinking going down the wrong path.
I started using Adobe with Photoshop 4 which worked good but in recent years I’ve grown somewhat disenchanted with Adobe.

As I always say – there’s no reason to use Adobe if you don’t want to.
There’s plenty of alternatives.
Xara
Quark
Scribus
Inkscape
Corel
Serif Plus
GimpBut none are as good are adhere to industry standards as Adobe products do, imo.

OK, nobody actually answered the question and I need the answer… The question again:
Can I disable “Allow Document Pages/Spreads to Shuffle” setting?
I do not want shuffle on. I want a two page spread (facing pages off) and to be able to drag my pages from a single page to a two page (or more) “at will” without them shuffling locations.
I realize I can manually do it (which I have for the initial 2 pages), but every time I click “new page” both shuffles are on by default. I want them BOTH OFF when I click new page without having to right click it twice to uncheck them.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

You’re saying that the “Allow Document Pages to Shuffle” setting keep getting turned on? That is weird. Does it happen with all documents (even new ones)?
The “allow doc pages to shuffle” should stay off when you turn it off. The allow spread pages to shuffle WILL turn on again after you make a new spread because, well, it’s a new spread. That setting only affects one spread at a time.

David,
I am having the same problem as Bryon. I turn off “Allow document pages to shuffle” and they still shuffle. I am using version 8.0. It only did it to the last 12 or 13 pages. I tried to go to my A-Master and “Apply Master to pages” hoping that would work.
I did insert some pages (which are in the last 12 to 13 pages). Would that cause it to shuffle? Again, I have turned off the “Allow document pages to shuffle” and it still shuffles.
Thoughts?
