      Hello
I am trying to copy and paste formatted text from InDesign into WordPress on either a Mac or PC. I am having difficultly on the PC because for some reason the <b> (bold) and <i> (italic) tags are not remembered when I paste into WordPress from InDesign. On a Mac this process is working, tags are copied into WordPress so the formatting remains (in the add new post window). Is there something that is different on a PC that would remove these tags. I can say that the <p> (paragraph) tag is recognized and is retained in WordPress on a PC. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
      Thanks
      rr

Does it work if you copy out of InDesign and paste into any other program, such as Word? If it does work there, then consider trying a different web browser to paste into?

      Hello David

      Thank you for the reply.

I had the client try copying to Word from InDesign and it does appear that the formatting is retained (Bold, Italic and paragraph tags). But no matter which browser he uses (i.e. Explorer, Chrome, Firefox) the bold and italic tags are not retained (the paragraph tag does work). Strange because all three tags are retained on a Mac with all browsers. Should I just tell him to go out and buy a Mac. ;-)

      Thanks again

This is just a shot in the dark, as I’m not familiar with Word Press and don’t work on a PC.

But—since when copying from InDesign into Word, the italics and bold used are the actual italic and bold fonts themselves. I wonder what would happen if you search and replace on those in Word. Instead of using the true italic and bold fonts, replace them with regular and replace with the fake (i.e., palette) italic and bold.

It may be a font issue.

I’m just throwing it out there.

Another thought: What happens if they copy from Word and paste into WordPress? (I believe WordPress has special filters that can convert Word formatting to HTML on the fly.)

      Thanks again for the responses.

I did have him try pasting from Word to WordPress directly and there was no change. I’m guessing that Word recognizes the font information from InDesign and simply uses the same font that is used in the InDesign document (and on his system). Is this an OS issue rather than an InDesign issue?

      Many thanks

Oh yes, given what you’re saying I think it’s very likely that this is an OS issue (or WordPress issue), not InDesign.

However, just to tease: Mike Rankin and I will be presenting a session at pepcon this June on the topic of Moving Content from InDesign to WordPress.

One of the main things we’ll be showing is how to export HTML directly from InDesign, clean it up with a script, and then just paste the raw HTML into WordPress.

Thank you. Seems like she is having even more issues than me…

Nice timing. I’d like to take a peek at that too.

If I find anything new I’ll post it here.

      Hello rr,

For reference here are valid html tags on w3c – https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_headings.asp , https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_paragraphs.asp for others please refer to the relevant areas of w3c schools.

Exporting html from InDesign can be then imported into WordPress via paste as html which was an option in the editor last time I used it, the export may need cleaning up to avoid inline styles.

Whatever styles are set up as definitions on the wordpress site in the css files for each tag will over-ride local formatting from InDesign exported html. If the goal is to re-create an exact replica from InDesign to WordPress for typography then the css or InDesign styles will need to be edited in order for both to be as close an approximation as possible, which may not be 100% achievable due to a number of factors. You should be able to get something close enough for the purposes though.

There is more information available on the Adobe documentation here – https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/paragraph-character-styles.html#map_styles_to_export_tags_cc_cs6_cs5_5

      Hope this helps,
      Sam

      Hi Sam

Thanks for the information. I’m not really posting HTML into WordPress. I just noticed that on a Mac when I copy from InDesign to WordPress the bold and italic characters are retained but when I do the same on a Windows machine it doesn’t keep that formatting information. For my client this is a big deal because some of the content requires the bold appearance throughout the post and it is very time consuming to edit what needs to be bolded manually in WordPress.

      Thanks
      rr
