      Hello,

I’ve been using InDesign for many years. A few months ago I went from CS3 (ID, PS, AI, DW) to the Creative Cloud subscription. Everything was CS6 at the time. I instantly began experiencing crashes in ID. Everything else is fine. I tried running ID CS3 as a backup, but even that began crashing (which it hadn’t before). I have been limping along, losing countless hours of work, missing deadlines. I have tried the Adobe forums with no luck, so now I’ve landed on your doorstep, desperate, frustrated and angry.

Best I can tell, the crashes are random. It’s not when I’m doing any one or two things. Selecting an object, typing, saving, exporting to PDF, packaging. Sometimes it goes into perpetual crash-mode, where it repeatedly crashes on relaunch. The only way out of that situation is to restart the computer. On occasion, I can go an hour or two without a crash. Sometimes no more than a minute or two. (See list of error messages below.)

And now a new one: I literally can no longer create a new document. It crashes every single time. I can only open an existing document, rename it, delete all content and reformat it. But this only works maybe 30% of the time. The rest of the time it crashes ID.

I have trashed the prefs. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Neither did anything. I’m the sole user, there’s no network.

Since CS6 has never worked, am I better off just downloading CC now and giving that a shot? Or will it likely just be more of the same? Can I have both CC and CS6 on my machine, or will CC overwrite CS6? I have projects in the works. If I upgrade (a relative term these days) to CC, will I be able to open CS6 documents with CC?

Bonus!: Today I was prompted to update Adobe Creative Cloud. I did, and it crashed during installation (Error code: A12E1).

I’ve pretty much lost all faith in InDesign, but I’m stuck using it. Can anyone help?

      My specs:
iMac 3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5
      24 GB RAM
      OS X 10.7.5

      Sincerely,
      Chad

Wow, that is really bad. I’m sorry to hear it. A few ideas:

      • Try creating a new user account on your computer. Then log out and log in under that account. See if InDesign works properly under the new account. If so, then it’s probably something to do with your system.
      • Make sure you’re not running any extra plug-ins. Like if you installed CS3 plug-ins into CC, that could be trouble.
      • The fact that you’re getting these database errors makes me wonder about the files you’re using. So be sure to try working with new files first.

        David,

        Thanks for the reply.

I created a new User account. Didn’t work. Plus, there were some new problems. For instance, when I opened any existing ID document it was labeled as “Read Only” up at the top of the window, even though it’s Read & Write in the Get Info: Sharing & Permissions window. When I tried “Saving” or “Saving As” any of these documents it crashed ID every time.

The only thing that worked under the new User was that I could create a new document, BUT I could not save it. That crashed it every time.

        There are no extra plug-ins.

It can’t be the files that are causing it, since I can’t even create a new file without crashing ID 100% of the time. But as I mentioned before, that’s only a new problem that started within the last couple days (i.e. it’s actually getting progressively worse).

I’m basically dealing with what is essentially a defective product. What do you think about bypassing CS6 and trying CC? Can I install that without overwriting CS6? Will I be able to open my CS6 files with CC? I would normally assume so, but at this point the program is operating like it’s got a poltergeist in it.

How on earth can this just be happening to me? It’s not possible, is it?

        * I also noticed something I think is weird regarding the User account thing. When I do a Get Info on any .indd, .eps, .ai or .pdf document there’s a user named “wheel” in the Sharing & Permissions window. But there’s no such User on my machine. Any idea what that is?

        Thanks again,
        Chad

        Hi David,

I know this discussion is rather dated but I’ve been having trouble opening my Indesign and Dreamweaver lately. Strangely enough Photoshop and Illustrator and working just great. I troubleshooted the suggestions you gave Chad at the start of the discussion…

..and when I created a separate Mac account all the apps were working perfectly without an error message. When you say “If so, then it’s probably something to do with your system”, what does that mean? Is there something I can do other than open these apps in a separate account?

        Thanks!

Tiffany: Your system means it is probably something on that account… typically something in the original account’s Library folder. This is always a pain and difficult to troubleshoot. Could be fonts, or some other Adobe preference, or… it’s hard to know. But if you have rebuilt your preferences, then it’s probably not specifically InDesign.

Okay, just a couple other ideas:

      • That “wheel” thing seems very weird. Try to repair permssions on your machine: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
      • Make sure you have the most recent version of CS6 (choose Help > Updates)

      Something is obviously very wrong.

Yes, you can run both CC and CS6 at the same time on the same machine. Yes, you can open CS6 files in CC (not vice versa, unless you export to IDML). But I’m not convinced that CC will help here. It might, but something has gone wrong on your computer somewhere, very deep.

      David,

      CS6 is up to date.

I repaired permissions this morning. Didn’t help.

I’m able to delete “wheel” from the Get Info panel of an individual document. But the document will still crash the moment I try to “Save As.”

Wouldn’t it be odd if there was a major problem with my computer, but it only affected one program? Especially a program that is so inextricably linked to a bunch of other programs that run just fine?

I suppose my next step is to install CC. After all, it’s not like it will make my computer explode (…right?).

      Thanks,
      Chad

      Chad:

I’m hesitant to jump in here, but I’ll add a couple of things. If you need to uninstall/install again, you may want to look into this: https://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html It’s supposed to do a better clean-up job than us mere humans.

It may not do much, but have you trashed your ~/Library/Cache folder? You can trash the folder and all contents as long as nothing is running. It doesn’t apply in this case, but in a network setting I find that InDesign is more sensitive to low space than other CS apps (but it usually warns you) and trashing the cache helps.

And one really simple thing you might try first. Locate InDesign’s plist file in the preferences folder and remove or rename (preferred) it and let InDesign rebuild it.

My suggestions may not help at all, but it sounds like you’ve nothing to lose. GOOD LUCK!

      Bob

      Hi guys,

I don’t know what happened to it, but I posted a followup yesterday (before Bob’s post).

Anyway, the short story is that I installed CC and everything works fine. I even opened a CS6 document from a current project, copied all content out and pasted it into a newly-created CC document and have been working on that since around midday yesterday without a single crash. For the sake of my mental health, I’m going to pretend that CS6 never existed.

(“wheel” still shows up in all my Get Info/Sharing & Permissions panels. But that may just be an entirely separate issue.)

      Thanks again,
      Chad

Congratulations on the forward progress. And don’t worry about “Wheel.” Users with admin rights can be assigned to this “super group.”

Owner – The owner is most often the user who created the file. Almost all files and folders in your home directory will have your username listed as the owner.
Group – Admin users are members of the groups called “staff” and “admin”. The super user “root” is a member of these and several other groups. Non-admin users are members of “staff” only. Typically, all files and folders are assigned to either “staff,” “admin,” or “wheel”.
Others – Others refers to all other users that are not the owner or part of the group for a file or folder.

I had this problem now, and it worked for me.

      https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-indesign-documents.html

      3. Troubleshoot for a damaged preference file.
InDesign stores information about plug-ins, features, and the application itself in its preference files: the InDesign SavedData and InDesign Defaults files. A damaged InDesign preference file can cause unexpected behavior with an InDesign document. You can easily determine if the problem is related to the preference files by re-creating them.

Note: Re-creating the InDesign preference files restores settings to their defaults, so you lose custom settings associated with the old preference files. Make sure to close InDesign before you re-create the preference files or InDesign can behave unexpectedly.

To re-create the InDesign preference files, do the following:

      Quit InDesign.
Now launch the application and immediately hold down the appropriate keys for your OS:

Mac OS X: Control + Option + Command + Shift
Windows: Control + Alt + Shift
A dialog appears, asking you if you would like to “Delete InDesign Preference Files?” Click Yes.
InDesign launches with defaults and regenerated Preferences

Thank you, Rodrigo M. I lost my Print Presets, so an online suggestion was to trash my InDesign cache; after that I kept getting a database error and couldn’t open any files at all.

After following your advice for recreating my preferences, everything seems to be fine.

I am new to Indesign being a Quark user for 20 odd years. I just installed Indesign C£6 from a Mastersuite disk having upped my RAM to 20GB on a 2 year old Imac. It worked for a couple of days, albeit with regular quits, but now I have the same problem as above ie quitting on startup saying that Indesign has stopped unexpectedly. I have restarted which didn’t help, and was about to reinstall but think I should ditch preferences first – where do I find the right file? A Spotlight search showed up several. What am I looking for and where please?
Thanks to anyone that can help

        Marion,

No known fix ever worked for me. No one at Adobe could ever provide anything that helped. The only thing that worked was skipping CS6 and going straight to CC. It’s been working fine for me ever since.

        Good luck.

    • #66950

Sorry Rodrigo M just realised that you told me what to do already. I will try rebuilding prefs
      Thanks

    • #66951

And thanks to David, who also let me know how to renew the preferences file. It was easy and seemed to work. Chad, thanks for replying too, though thankfully in my case rebooting the preferences has seemed to work. Cheers guys!

Been through all of this…reinstalled, reset prefs, resets prefs, saved prefs (including print presets, color palette presets, etc.)

All good ideas but none of them worked more than a day or so.

The ONLY thing that worked for me: I went to Font Book, selected all active fonts and Verified them all. Anything that showed up RED – – deleted. Anything that showed up YELLOW – – deleted.

No problems since. You have nothing to lose trying this.

Never had so many crashes as CS6. ID user since 1.0 and always praised it as such stable software. Not so CS6, regrettably. To the extent that I’ve scripted a preference copier app since I have to do it several times a day after crashes.

    • #83921

You may try the steps to fix the issues mentioned here – https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1013224?start=40&tstart=0

Alternatively, you may also try INDD file Repair tool – https://indd.filerepairtool.net/blog/indesign-crashes-while-trying-to-recover-a-damaged-document

It can solve the errors codes and then you can easily work on Adobe CS6.

Just give try, you never know all issues can be solved by this tool.

      • #83980

Henri–do you work for the company that created INDD File Repair Tool?

I’m curious as out of your three posts here at the InDesign Forums, you tell people about it in two of them.

I did check the website, and I have to admit I’m leery of even trying the demo. I’m sorry but the web site is full of misspellings, grammar errors, etc. And the word “best” is used way too many times.

Is it possible this is because it’s a non-English speaking company?

I have to ask one thing: Why does the site keep talking about computer viruses being responsible for InDesign file corruption?

    • #84005

if you upgraded your mac el capitan is not compatible with indesign cs6. Causing me major issues right now :(
