Hello everybody,
I am trying to figure out whether its possible to create Paragraph styles or text variables based on chapter numbers that automatically update upon every new insertion within the same Indesign document.
This seems to happen in Word without much effort but i fear i cannot understand how to mimic this within indesign.
I do not want to create a book, as i’d like to keep it simple.
For every new chapter, defined either by a new section in page or a new paragraph called heading 1, or a text variable insert
a list of figure and/or table numbers that follows the format
Figure/ Table:- Chapter Number.01
I’ve figured out that i can use a list but i am unable to create a dynamic chapter reference without creating a book currently.
Any help would be appreciated!!
Manosh
Sounds like you need text variables:

Wow David, super quick response- many thanks!
I’ll have a look at these carefully but I realized that they don’t discuss heading 2 or heading 3 levels.
Can we get these to work too with the second link you sent?
As long as they have their own paragraph or character style applied to them, you can make a text variable that “points” to them.
