Any other Mac users upgrade to El Capitan yesterday?

I did, with some not-so-good results.

Illustrator CS6 no longer opens (seems it’s a Java issue, and there’s a workaround floating around online somewhere). Well hey, it’s Illustrator, so who cares :-D

BUT… inDesign CS6 is giving problems too. 1) Launching the program takes somewhere around 2 minutes. I have a fast Mac with an SSD, and previously it would launch in just a couple of seconds; 2) Once its running, switching between any of the palettes – which previously was essentially instantaneous – now takes between 5 and 10 seconds, with the SPOD (Spinning Pizza of Death) making an unwelcome appearance; 3) Stability seems to have gone down the tubes. inDesign is now crashing frequently, whereas before a crash was a rare occurrence.

I’m hoping that there will be some kind of update from either Apple or Adobe to address this, otherwise it looks like I’ll be going through the fun of an OS downgrade. Moving to CC is not an option for me, either, as my main (well, only) client is a CS6 shop, and will be for the foreseeable future.

I’d be interested to hear if anyone else is having similar issues.

I have exactly the same issues. MB Air 2013 with ID CS6. Annoying.

    • #78491

No problem with Illustrator. No crashing (till now) with Indesign, but openning and switching between palettes VERY slow.

    • #78492

That worked for me, but I had to restart my computer (iMac), not just Indesign :

Well, that seemed to fix it. Thanks Michael!

After re-installing Java SE 6, I had the classic problem of the blank character palette. Then I trashed Indesign prefs and now all seems as normal as it can be.

    • #78627

This is why I never change my operating system immediately after release.

      Hi,
Hope someone can help. Since updating to El Capitan I am also experiencing problems with InDesign CS6. Loading is extremely slow and also moving pallets around. In the past it was very quick. I’m using a New Mac Pro. Has anyone found a solution?
      Many thanks.

    • #78650

To P Jones : install Java SE 6 as explained in the video. That worked for me (same problems as you describe).

Thanks Michael – I saw the video but can’t find the Java for El Capitan – the only one I can see is ‘javaforosx-2.dmg’. Do you know where I can get the correct version to download?

    • #78672

Expand the file “javaforox-2.dmg”. Java SE 6 is inside.

Hi Michel – When I expand it this is what is says but it doesn’t mention El Capitan?

‘Java for OS X 2015-001 installs the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.

This package is exclusively intended for support of legacy software, and installs the same deprecated version of Java SE 6 included in the 2013-005 release. If you require Java for applets or other non-legacy uses it is recommended you download the latest version of Java from https://java.com.

Please quit any Java applications before installing this update.

Installed El Capitan. No problem with InDesign CS6, Photoshop CS6, or Bridge. All ran on the first try without problems, and came up reasonably fast. Of course, as mentioned above, Illustrator CS6 needed the Legacy Java, and with that it ran fine.

      Hi everyone.
I thought the Legacy Java option had worked but InDesign still freezes. This always happens after the opening dialogue box slows down for awhile at the ‘Starting up panels…’ stage. Does anyone have the same problem? Under Yosemite it would start up in seconds! I’ve also updated to the latest version of El Cap.

I seem to have fixed this problem—I’m running InDesign 8.1.0.419 on 10.11.1—for now at least, and here are the steps I followed:

      – Installed the Legacy Java files (ID still crashed)
      – Started Photoshop first (for some reason helped ID get past the splash screen, but still crashed shortly after startup)
      – Turned off El Capitan’s hide menu bar feature (a shame, because I was liking it, but this bug is apparently affecting CC as well)

      Hope that helps someone.

        Thank you so much!

InDesign CS 5.5 was crashing upon start up under El Capitain, I started with the easiest step of your solution, turning off the hide menu bar, and now it works fine. I never would have discovered this…

        Hats off to you sir!

    • #78958

@ P Jones : did you try to trash Indesign preferences ?

I must confess however that despite replacing Java and trashing prefs, the tool panel has now a rather evanescent behavior when I move it. That is much better than before, but still frustrating.

Sorry Michel – Where are the Preferences?

Unbelivable but true. Following different solutions mentioned in this thread, I disabled “Automatically hide and show dock” in system preferences and my InDesign starded to act normaly. Very fast and stopped crashing. (I also trashed my preferences and let InDesign build new). So far, it works fine.

Wasn’t easy to figure out, here is the solution for getting CS6 to work on El Capitan…

cmd-space zooming in photoshop is now dreadful, there is a plugin workaround but that’s a pretty poor effort.
indesign seems to lose the pages/links/layers panels now until i quit and then re-open.
nothing in cc seems to be any quicker with osx 10.11.1…

      Hi Guys,

I have the same problem. I have updated to El Capitan few days ago and I regret it!
InDesign is extremely slow! I can’t work with it. It takes ages to do anything, even to click on the layers panel.
When trying to change the font the font list is not displaying. I am loosing precious time waiting on stuff to happen. I did what Michele recommended with installing the Java for El Capitan but it didn’t help :( Anyone else having the same issues? Is there a way of uninstalling the upgrade and going back to older OS? Help please!

      • #79183

Kate, did you restart your computer after installing Java SE 6 ?

        Hi

Even though I’m grateful for the help from other posters I’m still having occasional problems with InDesgin.

What I have noticed is that if you open InDesign whilst other software is running it takes quite some time to fully load and stalls for ages at the ‘Starting up panels…’ stage. Once it is loaded its then very slow and unresponsive.

BUT – if you RESTART your computer and open InDesign FIRST – before you open any other software – including Safari / Mail etc… – it loads much quicker and then performs as normal.

        Hope this works.

Hi, I just bought a new 27 inch iMac with El Capitan. I migrated everything from my 8 year old Mac without any issue but I’m really concerned about losing the ability to use CS6, which I bought in downloadable form in 2012, so have been stalling opening them.

Reading through all the advice on the forums, I installed the latest Java, 8, (figuring the latest would be the best), restarted and tried opening InDesign from the Applications folder, rather than from the dock with the Shift, Control, Option and Command keys held.

However, each time I try the window comes up asking me about agreeing to the trial.

I am assuming this is the Creative Cloud version, is this correct? I don’t want to go that way if I can help it because I don’t want to pay monthly and would rather continue using the one I purchased already. So, should I proceed or will I get myself into an irreversible situation?

I’m a little lost with the video because it doesn’t quite fit with my problem

      So, what do I do?

When I look in Applications there is now a second InDesign app Alias that has Date Modified as today. Have I messed it up already?

I use InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator and would be exceedingly grateful for help with getting my CS6 working as it has done till now

      Many thanks!

Hi Tina, did you get CS6 to work on El Capitan? I’m in a similar position of buying a new iMac and needing to hang on to CS6 as well as continuing to use CC.

        Thanks!

Thank you John Estes – your tip to deactivate the ‘hide/reveal menu bar’ resolved my inDesign problem – the font select panels failed! Now all working again. CS5

      Hi All,

I have done EVERYTHING suggested on this thread to fix ID CS6, all to no avail. Any other suggestions? El Capitan 10.11.3 and ID 8.1

      Thanks!

I was able to get everything but ID CS6 to work. Then I did this
I ran the adobe manager updates for CS6.
Then in the finder tool bar selected Go> Go to Folder
In the go to Folder box I typed ~/Library ( it might already be there for you)>Go
Then scroll way down to Preferences > Adobe InDesign > Version 8.0 folder
Deleted the Version 8.0 folder and relaunched ID. Works fine now.

I was have problems on my Mac in Indesign CS6 with the palettes in my workspace, I would click Pages and it would spring open then snap closed, if I kept clicking it would eventually stay open but then the same thing would happen when I clicked on Layers. At the same time fonts I had loaded in Suitcase Fusion were not appearing in my font list.
So I went to Extensis found a recommendation about removing fonts from 2 Libraries and clearing font caches this cleared my font issues and to my surprise my palettes started behaving, no more problems!

      One more thing to try.

Funny… Safari browser takes 2 minutes to open on my El Capitan – has done that for a long time. And now Indesign started to do the same… what solved it for me was deleting com.adobe.InDesign.plist stored in users/user/Library/Preferences. Indesign now starts pronto. Safari however… hasn’t gained speed doing the same.

Hi my macbook pro upgrade El Capitan 10.11, and install Java for OS X 2015-001 installs the legacy Java SE 6 runtime.

Unfortunately my Indesign CS6 can’t work only. Other AI, PS still open successful. How I fix my Indesign CS6?

I need it for my work :(

      • #88711

What isn’t working? Can you be more specific? Is it not lauching? Crashing? Not able to print?

      Hi Dwayne,

Just upgrade OS X EI Capitan afterward, I found only Indesign can’t open software normally. I can open AI, PS that work.

It always shown “white warn” or no respond while I open but I can’t see anything. So why I can’t work in ID anything.

Please see there for your reference.

Hoo Yee: That is bad! :-(
Have you tried resetting your preferences? There are some troubleshooting instructions here:

        FAQ

If it continues to crash on launching, you may need to uninstall and re-install the software. That is rare, but it sometimes happens.

        Hi David,

Thank you so much for this link. I had resetting my preference that it can launching !!! Wow!!! Thank you God blessing me!!

Else I shall very trouble if I reinstall Indesign or install new OS X.

So I never upgrade anything again I promise! :(

I installed Sierra yesterday on my iMac 27″ (mid 2011, 3,4 GHz Intel Core i7). First, CS6 worked no longer. Then I had to reistall JAVA 6 ( https://bit.ly/Java_SE_6_for_El_Capitan). Now, all is OK, even better than with El Capitan.

      • #89038

Really happy. Indesign CS6 behaves normally on Sierra and Java6. El Capitan/Indesign is now a past nightmare for me.

    • #89541

Hiding the menu bar also works for Sierra issues.

      I’m on:
      – Sierra
      – Indesign CS 6

      and sometimes i got:
-the slow start (“Starting up panels”)
      – opening panels was a nightmare (spinning ball et al).

      Solution:
Restarting the Creative Cloud App (the icon / pop-up in the menu bar) would make this issue go away.

        Hi João,
I’m also on: Sierra + InDesign CS6 and same issues: slow start and almost imposible working with panels (Paragraph Styles, etc)
I restarted Creative Cloud App and I still have the problem.

Big deal here with a lot of work to do…
Does anyone is having this problem ?
Any clue of how to fix this?

      I would try these things:
      1. Rebuild your preferences: https://creativepro.com/rebuilding-indesign-preferences.php
      2. Close all panels you do not need (not just minimize them in the dock, but actually close them). Then try closing all the panels, even the ones you think you do need!
      3. Make sure your third-party plug-ins and add-ons have been updated properly
      4. Do you have the same problem with a brand new document? Or is it only certain documents?
      5. Try logging into a new account (like a guest account) on your computer and launch InDesign from there.
      6. Try turning off your internet connection (no wifi, no ethernet)

      Hi David,
      Thanks.
I quit Creative Cloud from the top menu, rebuild my preferences and everything seems to be fine.(actually better than before in El Capitan)
But now the PDF presets have gone…
