I’m on a Windows 10 64 bit machine, running InDesign CC 2017. I have to make a fixed-layout ePUB, where one of the pages displays a list of thumbnail images of people. Each thumbnail will be 70px X 90px. A total of 12 be laid out over 4 columns and 3 rows.

I want to be able to click a thumbnail so it loads a larger version of the same image into a lightbox overlay; preferably it would float left. I’d also like to have the lightbox display some text, which would flow around the image. (The text will be a bio about the particular person.)

What’s the best way to do this?

Do I even need a lightbox or is there another way to do it?

Hello Christopher, did a solution work for you?

I have some detailed charts in a fixed ePub that I might consider using a similar method for viewing.

      hi Jon,

Ken Jones provided one solution using a lightbox running jquery. It works like a charm. However, I was not able to replicate what he did for other fixed-layout ePUBs. The problem I run into is the text, which is absolutely positioned in the overlay, has spacing issues. I haven’t been able to resolve this, short of manually adjusting the position for each word, which is way too time consuming.

I’d be grateful to have a look at your suggestion.

      Hey Ken,

Appreciate the follow up and wish I had a suggestion for you.

As I’ve played with various output options, there’s not much I found that I can do for the incredibly complex tables I’m having to work with. Luckily the client is happy with a straight up fixed spread page ePub that their users can pinch and zoom in on. If we do another ePub for this content, we’ll drastically reformat the information for the medium.

      Jon,

Just to clarify, Ken is the one who helped me, but I’m the one who posted this question. I guess I misunderstood your post in that you’re looking for a solution too.

I recently purchased an ePUB which has a similar method of generating an overlay, but for footnotes. However, I haven’t had a chance to crack open the epub and see how this was done. If I can figure this out and replicate it consistently, I’ll post my findings here.

Hey Chris, sorry for the confusion. Look forward to any new findings you come across. Thank you.
