I am in the process of trying to create a fixed layout epub for a book that we published last year. I have done extensive research about fonts when exporting to the fixed layout and I am totally aware that you have to use open-type fonts OR Typekit fonts. I have done both in an attempt to get my file to hold on to its fonts but with ZERO success. I have tried every trick I can find and no matter what when I open my epub in iBooks after about five second the entire document switches over to a generic san-serif font.

I wondered if it was just the document so I made a test five page document and had the exact same result. Even though I used open-type fonts, it refuses to hold on to any of them and automatically changes to the generic sans serif font. I have watched video after video and this NEVER seems to be an issue when people export to a fixed layout epub.

I have even tried attaching a CSS file and the only font that stuck was Times New Roman, but NOT the bold or italic Times New Roman.

I am at my wits end. I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I have updated my Creative Cloud and my iOS but nothing works. I’ve been at this for weeks now so if anyone knows what’s going on, your advice would be INVALUABLE.

I’m sorry, I’ve never seen this fail before. Hmmm.

      Which version of InDesign?

Are you positive you’re choosing EPUB (Fixed-Layout) and not EPUB (Reflowable) as the output option? (sorry, have to ask).

Are you getting any warnings when exporting?

Do other elements of the ebook work … that is, is the page geometry the same as in the INDD file?

Can you export to PDF and have the fonts appear in the PDF?
