I’ve been working on an Indesign CS6 doc for a few weeks now. All has been normal. Printouts reflect same as screen image, as it should. The morning I was to build direct mail comps for my client meeting that afternoon, the printer couldn’t read one font, a Univers condensed. Some ill-fitting default font printed in it’s place.
I looked up the tactic of deleting some font cache files to help streamline glitches like this, the ones named ‘Adobe FntName.lst’—but did’t even see any of those filenames on my system to delete.
I then considered using Font Nuke, but hesitated at using a non-Mac App. Should I just use?
Anyone have a suggestion? (I need to get this direct mail file to the printer by the end of this week….!)
Thanks in Advance. /Scott

What happens if you export a PDF file (file > export) and then open that in Acrobat or Reader? Can you print from there?

Was this a file that you had no problems printing before or a new file?
Postscript or open type font?
Are the fonts in a “Document fonts” folder or just system fonts? Are you using any programs like Suitcase, Fusion, etc.?
It is possible that you have the screen font but not the printer font. Postscript fonts have two folders (one is the screen font and the other is the printer font). Maybe the printer font is missing or got corrupt?
I always use Font Doctor for my fonts. It checks fonts and fixes any corruption and warns of a missing screen or missing printer font.
And as David said–try to export as a PDF. You can try that, but I’m guessing you will get an error message of a missing font while the PDF is being made.

Dave/Dwayne: I can print a pdf of the file just fine. So that’s’ good.
Dwayne:
A. This is a file I had NO PROBLEMS printing before, a good 3 weeks immediately before the problem.
B. Was going to look at what kind of Font The Univers was…to answer your questions—but have had my font app, Font Book, freeze up on me 4 times consecutively this morning for first time. Guessing Font Book may be the problem…May have to look into Font Doctor.rebooting all…

Hey Scott
It’s sounding like a corrupt font. And I’m glad the PDF prints.

Hey there, Dwayne—
I started checking other versions of this Indesign document, ones that I have copied and pasted large sections from the non-printing doc. And shockingly, THEY PRINT FINE. Frustrating. It must be this particular Indesign doc that is corrupt in this minor way?!
SO, I am about to rebuild my direct mail piece using elements from the PRINTABLE document.
thanks.

Good luck, Scott. And keep us posted. You might want to export as IDML. That can sometimes fix corruption.
Keep us posted on your progress.
