Hi
(In InDesign CS6)
In Adobe Acrobat, you can set a password for opening a pdf file (“Require a password to open the document” option). Now is there a free app/script or embeded option in Adobe InDesign to set a powerful password on “INDD” files (Adobe InDesign projects files) for protectiong such as pdfs in Adobe Acrobat?
Best Wishes
Masoud

Unfortunately, I have not seen anything like that. The best option is usually to make a password protected Zip file with the InDesign file inside it.

you can make password protected pdf file, and insert it to your document – InDesign will ask the password before placing this pdf document… and InDesign will ask to type password from this pdf doc before opening .indd file

@Dear Oleh
I tried it and I found interesting thing. When I open the .indd file including the my protected pdf file, InDesign asks me to type/insert the password, in second time I choose “Cancel” button to see what happen and how InDesign reaction to select the “Cancel” button, but the file was opened!?!. I can see the the almost blur layout of everything in my layout. if I choose Zoom (Z) tool and click over the protected frames (the pdfs I placed) their contents were disappeared (the protected frames turn into grey color with a cross lines into it; exactly like you select “Fast Display” command (View > Display Performance > Fast Display).
If value zoom is set to 75% or higher; nothing shows, but less than 74% everything appears and this is thing I don’t like.
Also I select Preferences > Grids > “View Threshold” drop-down menu and changed the value to lowest number that InDesign accepts (5%), but it doesn’t work and everything shows in 74% zoom set again and again?!
Why I choose “Cancel” button; InDesign open the protected file? -

@Masoud, probably because password protected pdf can be protected from editing and printing only, but its opening anyway in acrobat or reader for viewing…
InDesign is software for layout design, not info encryption.. I know for sure that there is encryption software for windows platform, that allows to password-protect whole folder – which is better, as you can secure fonts and images as well.. I’m not sure, but I think there should be similar soft for Mac…
Also you can create password protected .rar or .zip arcive – of course this will not save you from hackers (advanced users), but why the hack you want to password protect your InDesign files? are you working with FBI or other secret organization?))

I’m sure I set password for Opening section, not editing and printing section. Of course I know some useful encryption software or making a ZIP/RAR file (As David mentioned it in this post). I don’t work for any secret organization. I live in Iran and I don’t think FBI doesn’t’ like to recruit an Iranian as its personnel to hidden and protect their thrilling and secret files inside InDesign.:D

in that case it looks like a bug that need to be reported to developer team, but seems they never read those reports
