I am trying to start an InDesign – Incopy workflow in my in-house shop and have encountered my first issue.

When opening an InDesign file housed on a server through InCopy I get an error that says:

“This file is already open by another user or another application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it”.

This only happens when the file is opened in InDesign first and then the editor tries to open it in InCopy. If the file is opened first in InCopy and then opened in InDesign, then the error does not appear. Is this a known error? Is there anything I can do to have the file open without error no matter which program opens the file first?

      I get the error when:
      1. File is in a Windows server
      2. I open the file in InDesign
      3. (while the file is open in InDesign) I open the file in InCopy
      4. I GET ERROR

I don’t get the error when:
      2. I open the file in InCopy
      3. (while the file is open in InCopy) I open the file in InDesign
      4. NO ERROR

      Thanks for the help!

      UPDATE:

I notice that the bug also affects the “Update Design” feature in InCopy.

      1. Designer changes layout in InDesign (change in design)
      2. Designer saves file but keeps file open.
      3. Assignments panel prompts Editor to update the design (Out of Date)
      4. Editor clicks on “Update Design”
      5. InCopy closes the file and I GET ERROR

In this case the bug is more troublesome because in order to get it to work on both computers (Editor and Designer), the Editor needs to ask the Designer to close the file and for him to open it first (so the same way I described earlier)

Hi Eric, I see that there are more people who have similar problems to mine, with InCopy.
I work in a veterinary publisher. My job is a magazine layout using Indesign. In my template I put the InCopy files created by my colleague, editor of content. I create assignments for articles and then she makes corrections in InCopy file. In my indd document, I update assignments, and when everything is right, I unassign and you are ready to post.
Everything worked fine until recently. When I had to update multiple assignments (step 4 on your list), error!: indd document and program (step 5) are closed. Several attempts without result. Indd document is corrupted.
My editor works on PC, I work on mac… I think there is a program version conflict.
Eric: our problem is similar but not identical. Sorry I can not give a solution for you.
Someone can help Eric and me?
