      Hi there,

I have a 600+ page book that is in 22 chapters, it’s set up as an .indb file. When I export it as single pages it’s perfectly fine but now the client wants a PDF in spreads. In the book, the last page of one chapter is supposed to be facing the first page of the next chapter, but in the PDF it treats these two pages as singles.

Is there a simple way to either combine the files into one flowing .indd (so that I can PDF as spreads) or export the book directly to PDF but still have the correct facing pages?

I’m using CS6. Thanks for your help.

      Hello Hyppe,
If I understood correctly what you wish to do there seems to be a very simple solution. It assumes that your ID file’s document is set to have a spread of left and right pages:
All you have to do is to insert one blank page in the beginning of each chapter. It will push all pages to the right, that is, page 1 will become page 2, page 2 will become page 3 and so on.
Now that you have this, export a PDF choosing the Spreads button in the General > Pages configuration window.
Let me know if this worked :-)
      Good luck
      Tom

Thanks for your response Tom, I tried that but that means that my existing facing pages are wrong.

So, page 1 of the book is the title page, it needs to be a recto (on the right hand side when the book is open)

The first chapter ends at page 14, a verso (the left hand page when the book is open). Page 15 is the first page of the second chapter, it should be a recto next to page 14. If I insert a blank at the beginning of chapter 1, the first page with content on it becomes a recto and it’s last page becomes a recto. If I insert a blank at the beginning of chapter 2, it’s first page becomes a verso.

Confusing! The book has printed and the digital version in spreads must match.

I might have to resort to using the ‘Move Pages’ funtion to create one single PDF.

Was your original book created as spreads or single pages? I would check for chapters that end on recto pages and on those I would add a blank page at the end. By default, Indesign starts each new document on a recto page. Is that the case with your chapters?

Guz, my book is created in spreads. I ended up moving all 22 chapters one by one into a single document. There was a new section marker at the start of each chapter (forcing it onto a recto page) that I just manually removed so that it would sit next to the preceding page. I didn’t want to introduce blanks into the document as it has a comprehensive (and complicated) contents page and about 45 pages of endnotes and index.

Thanks for all the advice :)

      Hello Hyppe,
What you did is correct. to allow my suggestion to work you need all chapters in one file.
Actually, since this is not the file that you wish to print, rather to please your client to produce him a PDF, this is just an auxiliary file for that purpose.
      Good luck
      Tom
