I’m starting this topic to give a place for everyone to share their thoughts on Adobe and InDesign CC 2017, instead of attaching them to Steve Werner’s article on what’s new. Have at it, but keep it civil and remember this is InDesignSecrets, not Adobe.com.

I remember being so excited about the CS3 and CS5 releases because they had so many small, thoughtful enhancements that made my life as a newspaper/magazine/book designer so much easier. Put another way, the last time I was excited about an InDesign upgrade was in 2010.
I’d love to see some more finely grained logic added to Paragraph Styles, recognizing that there are plug-ins that do accomplish these goals.
I’d love to see scripting demystified and a little easier. They save me hours on my newspaper workflow but I’ve developed them with raw, brute force.
I’d love to see the ability to have a paragraph style with rules around all four edges of either the width of the text or the column. By the way, Ventura Publisher could do this in 1986. And certainly the ability to define a color behind a style is a welcome addition to CC2015, but the workaround posted on to make that a rule is as extreme as it is freakin’ ingenious.
I’d love to define the basis of a Paragraph Style using a Character Style (an option in Quark since 4.0). Anne-Marie posted a workaround for that in 2006, I believe, using nested styles, but it’s hard to get to for editing, and it got in my way. I’d love to have it more intuitive and official.

Just curious if anyone else has seen sluggishness since they installed the upgrade? It seems to happen most when I try and move an object–an image, a shape, etc. I did a quick search on the Adobe site, and found nothing. If I don’t hear anyone else complaining about funkiness from the upgrade then I will trash and rebuild my Preferences and hope that fixes things.

I am a very amateur InDesign user and since updating to 2017 I’m having a problem with the OpenType update. For instance, I have a text box that has OpenType font in it but when I click on the icon it says “OpenType properties are not applicable” and when I try to add it to my document over top of a graphic box, the text disappears. I made sure to have the text layer in front but the text is still gone. Anyone know what is going on and how to fix it? Thank you!

This may help with the text disappearing: https://creativepro.com/where-is-my-text.php
The OpenType thing is harder to understand… though just because you’re using an OpenType font doesn’t mean the font has any special properties. There are many opentype fonts that don’t have any ligatures or fractions, etc. Perhaps try one of the ‘pro’ fonts from Adobe, which usually have a bunch of cool features.

I’ve recently updated InDesign CC 2015 to the CC 2017 version, but now my (Apple)Scripts and plug-in software isn’t working anymore. For instance, the WordsFlow software, which we use very much, didn’t even load anymore. Fortunately, Em-software was very quick in providing an update, but the scripts are a different story.
Does anybody has the same problem? And if so, is there a (simple) solution?
Thanks!-

I wish that Adobe included a big notice that said: “Your plug-ins will definitely stop working when you upgrade, and your scripts might stop working.” That is always the truth.
Here are my thoughts on upgrading: https://creativepro.com/should-adobe-fix-older-versions-of-programs/

Why, when you go to place a PDF, the option button is all the way to the left and you have to click that to show options? Why aren’t the options there like they’ve always been and you select what you want to use?

Rich: I thought that was a new thing on the Mac, and was perhaps due to a new version of the OS? But maybe I’m wrong. I agree it’s annoying.

Hi there, this is my first post. Since upgrading to 2017, I’ve had a seemingly random thing occur with some of my text frames: sometimes, while in Type mode, one of my frames and its handles will turn solid blue (even while typing) during Preview when I press ?S. It only happens to one frame at a time, and it remains visible whether my type cursor is active within that frame, in another, unthreaded one, or when any text box is selected. It disappears when no text frames are selected, then reappears when any one is selected again. The only way I can get the blue frame to disappear during selection is to hit ?A for the text inside the frame in question. Do you know why this is happening or how to make it go away?
Thanks in advance!

I don’t know why that would happen. But try turning off the GPU (if that is enabled) and see if that helps.
https://creativepro.com/gpu-support-and-animated-zoom-arrives-for-mac.phpIf that doesn’t change anything, then I would suggest rebuilding your preferences.

This is my first post. It may sound bizarre but I like how I can scale the arrow heads on strokes like you can in Illustrator.

Does the new OpenType adornment work with a French version? I just installed it and created a new document and it does not seem to work. However, the preference (Type > Advanced) is correct.

There seem to be a few bugs with cc 2017. When I try to use Section and Numbering options they don’t show up on my pages panel, and when I backsave to idml for colleagues still on CS6 the text variables I am using as page headers seem to reapply themselves and can’t be over-ridden. Would go back to 2016 version if I could.

I do see Numbering and Section Options in my Pages Panel menu in CC 2017, right underneath “Create Alternate Layout …” . Take another look?
Not sure about the text variables used as page headers. That’s a stranger one. However I would expect some problems when moving from CC 2017 all the way back to CS6, that’s quite a number of versions ago.

Since upgrading to 2017, I’ve noticed one predominant glitch and I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this. For no apparent reason, menus within InDesign will stop responding to my drop-down menu selection. For instance, I try to use the “Multiple Returns to Single Returns” GREP command in the Find/Change dialog box — but the drop-down will not “stay” selected on my selection. Or I try to change the ruler units in the Preferences box: same thing, the drop-down menu will not accept the change from picas to inches.
I hope I’m describing this accurately enough to get some feedback. The only thing that “fixes” it and returns all menu drop-downs to normal functioning is a restart of the program. I don’t have to trash preferences.

Hi Julianne, we too are struggling with drop down items not sticking. I am trying to find a better solution. You can use the arrow keys to make a selection within the drop down menu, but this is not a great work around, especially when you have a ton of saved greps to choose from. Does anybody have an answer for this.
Tried clearing prefs.
Thanks

Am I the only one to seams to have incomplete Paragraph Style window?

Your second image matches the options I have in my paragraph style options window. If you are seeing the first set of options, I think it is time to reset your preferences and see if that solves your problem.
I also just wanted to share that I got really confused looking at your first example. I know enough French that it didn’t immediately jump out at me that your style names were in a different language, but once I realized it, my brain kept going back and forth trying to figure out how you could be using a version of InDesign that used both French and English. :-)

That did the trick, good cue (even if I hate having to reset all the preferences :(
And yes, InDesign is in English; I’m just naming my Paragraph Styles with French titles!
I’m from Montréal, Québec. We’re so surrounded by English culture that it’s just easier to have the software in English!

I’ve got a seemingly ridiculous question – and yes, I’m a fairly “basic” ID user! Since upgrading my computer to Windows 10, it seems like I’ve had issues getting ID to print correctly, the latest unresolved issue is retaining the number of copies I need to print. I need to print 50 booklets and set the number to 50 by the time I actually hit print, the original box that pops us jumps back to 1. I’ve tried creating and using presets for both ID and the printer and it doesn’t help. I closed every thing out and reset my preferences, but it still bounces back to “1”. Any suggestions??
Is there another place I should be posting this question? So far everything I’m seeing (and isn’t quite what I want) is on older versions.
