I’m using the Knockout Group transparency effects setting on a white-filled shape to let the background color come through the text that is in the shape. The transparency for the text also uses Isolate Blending, Knockout Group, and the Opacity is 0%. Everything looks awesome when I publish the PDF and look at it in Acrobat, but the knockout effect is gone when viewing on an iPad in the default PDF viewer or iBooks. You only see the white-filled shape, no text.
Printing to a PDF or using the transparency flattener in Acrobat fixes this issue, but then I get the dreaded “faint white lines” around several images that use transparency as well as some text in a table.
Has anyone faced these issues and come up with a good solution? Kind of hating the iPad right now…
Don’t hate the iPad, just hate the dumb and dumber PDF implementation that Apple uses in iBooks and elsewhere. PDF is a big problem because there are many different readers. Just like PDFs can look and behave differently in the Mac OS Preview app from Apple than Adobe’s own free Reader software… you should try installing Adobe Reader on the iPad. Does that help?
