leading in and out of paragraph

This seems simple but I can’t figure it out, best practices wise. I need to have 2 types of leading: one in the paragraph and one in between paragraphs. I know how to change each instance but I’d like to do it the right way and specify it in my styles.

I think what you’re looking for is the feature called “Space Before” or “Space After.” You can find these fields in the Control panel (when it’s in paragraph mode) or in the Paragraph panel. (Or, better, when editing your paragraph styles, in the Indents and Spacing pane.)
