I have very link and cross reference heavy document. I have decided to split it into four smaller documents. When I do so and attempt to relink the cross references in in the four docs to each other I am only allowed to relink one doc. When I try to relink to one of the other 2 unlinked docs my option to relink cross references is grayed out.

My question: How do I split a cross reference heavy document into smaller documents and successfully relink all the cross references?

I have never tried, that and I’m not sure if it’s possible. My first guess is that you probably need to rebuild the x-refs.

A number of people who say they do documents with a LOT of cross-references say that “Cross References Pro” from DTPTools.com is far better than the feature built-in to InDesign. Have you seen it?

Thanks David. I have not seen it. I will check it out. I do wish that InDesign would allow me to do this. Save alot of work. This a parts catalog with the cross refs referring to parts in the catalog for the index at the front of each section. Lot of rebuild time. Have to do it though.

      Thanks for the suggestion.

This needs surely a little love and a small(!!) example.
