When I try to apply a master page to any of my document pages I get the message: “Page [X] has a custom page size. This page can retain its current size or be resized to match the new master.”
Why? Although I did inherit this template file from another designer, from what I can see there are no alternate layouts that would be causing this.

The plot thickens: Now when I try it I get a second message after the first: ‘Internal error communicating with AI rulebase. Layout adjustment could not be performed.’
I guess this is unrelated to the first issue. I changed the margins on the master pages that I’m applying, and turned on Layout Adjustment when I did so.
It does apply the masters, but does not adjust the existing text frames to the new margins (ie the layout adjustment indeed fails).

I had this also a few times. I also couldn’t figure out how it happened. But I ended up resetting the Master page (even if it was correct, just re-inserting the correct dimensions) and then dragging that down on the problematic pages. There probably is a better way of doing it, but I couldn’t get anything else to work.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, Rivkah. I’ll try your method next time!

This just happened to me today as a result of deleting a page. The right-hand page took on a master page that was originally a left-hand master and I got that message. I still don’t know why, but I did undo and then just dragged down the correct masters instead of deleting a page and it was OK.

I realise this is an old post but I am still getting this error message when dragging a master page onto a new page.

Each page in an InDesign document can have its own size, controlled with the Page tool in the tool panel. Select the Page tool and click the page and the control panel will show you the page. It’s possible that one or more of your pages has a custom size.
