Missing Text

Hi, I’m running InDesign CS4 and am having difficulty exporting specific text within my document. A little project background: I’m working on a 400+ page book/catalog and I’ve used Character Styles throughout.

Everything looks great until I try to export to PDF. On some pages the entire texts exports perfectly (the issue doesn’t appear to be the Style). On others, random type goes missing. The only pattern I can discern is the missing text is all typed on a line path. The line it is typed on appears fine, just not the text typed on it. I’ve tried removing the Character Styles and Creating Outlines with the same result. I have exported my catalog numerous times in the past without this issue. I’ve also tried rebooting my program with no luck.

Any ideas on what might be wrong are greatly appreciated!

      Thanks,

      Bethany

please provide an image of what your PDF looks like compared to what your ID page looks like. From your description it is hard to understand your problem
In any case, it is not a very good practice to use Character styles to format text. Instead, you should use Paragraph Styles which warrant consistency.

      Tom,

How do I send you my screen shots?

      B.

What PDF setting are you using?

If the smallest size possible, it will do some wacky things.

EDIT: To post screen shots, you will need to host them in something like Drop Box or 4shares or something. And then send post the link.

Using character styles throughout is not the way to do things.

Use Paragraph Styles to style a paragraph, then apply a character style to individual words/letters within the paragraph using character styles.

<parastyle>Sample paragraph text and apply bold.</parastyle>

In the above, the main body of text is assigned a parastyle, and the “apply bold” would have a character style Bold.

      Back to your issue.

It could be the text is set to overprint.

Hard to know why though – but something to check.

You should also view problematic pages using View>Overprint Preview.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t get the impression that the OP is using too many character styles. She just said throughout.

It’s quite possible she’s using them for italic, bold, small caps, bullets, etc. (i.e., the normal stuff we all do).

      Bethany,
Most members of this forum use this site to upload images:

Sadly IndesignSecrets does not allow for pasting images inside a message :-(
I would still like to see what is happening to your project.
But, as other said too, the way to go is using paragraph styles and then marking characters, words or even strings of text with a character style.
      Cheers
      Tom

Thanks guys for the responses. Your feedback is helpful and appreciated. Just to clarify, I used the Character Styles on headers and diagram call-outs. The majority of my text is styled with Paragraph Styles.

As for the PDF export settings, I am using the specs sent to me by my publisher. I’ve used the same settings for multiple projects without issue. The export is high quality.

Below is a Dropbox link to access my file examples. The “SU” PDF is one of several with missing text. There is commonality in what is not showing up–the same Character Style was used and all text was typed along a line path. Interestingly enough, I have other pages with the same styles and diagrams and they show up just fine (see DWiper example).

      Thanks for the help!

Ok, so I tried copying an A & B line diagram from a page that exports properly. When pasted to a page where the A & B won’t export, the copied text also becomes invisible. This leads me to believe the issue is tied to individual pages not styles. What settings could I check that have to do with text on a path?

I’ve noticed one other thing…the text disappearing act is happening after a certain page number. I had recently inserted 10 pages into my document. Now pages after 69 with text on a line path are disappearing when exported. The pages affected are running off 12 or so different master pages. I’ve done something to the page setting at page 69 and have no idea what :|.

Anyone know why text on a line path might disappear when exported to PDF?

Looks like the text is set to “non-printing” or something similar in Illustrator or whatever program was made to make the diagram.

Although – then it wouldn’t appear in the placed file?

I’d like to take a look at the source files for this – the InDesign file and the linked images – if you can upload them to dropbox and I will take a look.

I just ran into exactly this same problem. Everything works fine up to a certain page number (in my case 65) and then the headers typed on a path do not export. Was a solution ever found for this problem? We planned to go to production this week, and now I’m completely stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sherryl: It’s so hard to know. Have you tried exporting the file as IDML and then opening the IDML file (that gets rid of oddness/corruption). Have you checked to ensure they’re not set to Non-printing in the Attributes panel? Will they export to other formats, such as JPEG or will they print?
