I use a paragraph style to name my figures and number them automatically, as well as cross references to refer to the figures in my documents. With the document I am working on now, my cross reference panel shows “OV” instead of a page number for the referenced image and the yellow triangle with exclamation mark icon to indicate that the reference isn’t up to date. When I hover over the “OV” it says “Source in overset text. Click to go to page.” Though when i click to see where the overset text is it goes to a page in my document and selects a text box, but the text box has no overset text. Also, I check the preflight panel and there is no indication of any overset text. What would this “OV” be referring to?

That’s pretty weird. Try the Weird InDesign Stuff Elimination (WISE) technique:

File > Save As, and choose IDML as the output format. Open the IDML file (creates a new, untitled document) and check if the problem is still there. This fixes myriad cases of oddball errors that don’t make sense, by cleaning out any clutter that the original document has accumulated through being edited.

If the problem goes away, save your new document over the old, corrupted one. As a bonus, you’ll see a — possibly huge — reduction in file size.
