I am very new to InDesign, I am currently taking a class in college that teaches about it and goes through the steps to doing everything. However, I am not quite understanding the Package thing? My instructor wants me to package the file that I am working on and then upload them to blackboard, which is the program that my school uses for online students, but when I start to upload the packaged folders to blackboard it wont let me upload the entire folders, it just wants me to upload a single file. So, I was wondering if I go ahead and send just my file to my instructor, if I have already packaged the file, if that will still give him all of the fonts and the graphics and instructions for printing too. I will lose points on my grades if I don’t get this right. If you have any experience with packaging or blackboard or anything like that please comment! My homework is due Monday September 8th, 2014.

No, you will probably need to zip-compress the folder. For example on the Mac, you would right-click (or ctrl-click with a one button mouse) and choose Compress from the pop-up context menu. That will turn the whole folder into a .zip file that you can upload. In Windows, you do something similar, like right-click and choose “Make zip archive” (I can’t remember the wording exactly).

Tell your instructor that I say you should get extra credit because you were smart enough to come to InDesignSecrets to ask. :-)

I have windows, and I right clicked the file and it has an option that says 7Zip, so I clicked that and it gave me 6 options, I chose “Add to File.zip” is that correct? And if I upload this will my teacher still be able to see it in the InDesign format and be able to edit it and all? Because to grade my work he has to see what fonts I used and the paragraph and character styles and everything.

And thanks, I emailed him and he hasn’t emailed me back yet I had to go ahead and submit my work for last week the best way I knew how because he didn’t answer me in time so I am hoping I can get something done about this before Monday! Thanks so much for your help!

      Emilie,
I had the same issue with last weeks assignments. I ended up zipping the folder together and submitting it that way. It’s very simple and gets everything there how he wants it.
