I have a 750 page docx file that I have placed into inDesign. I selected ‘Show Import options’ and made sure that I’m importing index text and I’m preserving styles. When I place the file and go to Window > types and tables> index, then generate index I get an incomplete index. By incomplete I mean there are only 10% entries there should be.
I have a suspicion this index is a relic from the past. The document was originally and indd file. I exported the indd file to rtf files so people could edit them. The index in the original indd was incorrectly configured, mostly manually typed instead of using the index panel. In the original doc if I generated the index only 10% of the entries would display. These are the exact same entries I see after importing the docx files. For some reason indesign is picking up these old entries and ignoring the index entries from the word doc.
OmmGosh. What a headache. Honestly, I’d try to strip out the index and start from scratch. I detest Word but it sounds like the issue relates, as you say, to the original file. I am sure you’ve thought about it, but when something like this crops up, I start thinking in 50 page cut-n-recreate. I like clean files.
