I have a current book printing project that is to be part inkjet and part letterpress. I need to use the Print Booklet feature to impose the book correctly. However, when I print from InDesign (CS6 or CC) on 11×17 paper to our Epson Workforce 1100, the print will not be centered, even though it shows the print being centered in the preview and centered is checked. I need the pages to be dead center because they print front and back. If I export the spread to a PDF and print via Acrobat Pro, the pages are centered. But I have yet to find a practical way to get Print Booklet to print to PDF. I have printed this same project on 11×17 paper on a Xerox phaser and the centering worked just fine. Why would it not work on an Epson inkjet printer? I’m printing from a Mac running 10.8 and InDesign CC (doesn’t work from CS6 either). Any help appreciated!

It is almost certainly a printer driver problem. Click Printer in the Print dialog box to adjust printer driver settings. But this might be hard to adjust.

Katie, sorry for the late reply. As David said, it does sound like a printer driver problem, but if you’re having trouble getting the results you need from that, David published a great article on how to create imposed PDFs in InDesign by way of a PostScript file. The article is linked below. Saved me a ton of time for a recent project. The only variation I made was that instead of converting the PostScript file to PDF in Acrobat, I used Distiller as it gave me more control over the PDF preset options I wanted. In Acrobat, I believe you have to actually change your default PDF presets, whereas in Distiller you get to choose from a menu per job.

Thanks for the information. I had actually tried going to PDF via PostScript and Distiller and was still getting pages off center. I had left out a step in David’s helpful HOW TO; I forgot to set the PPD. When I did that, everything worked beautifully, and I am now able to print spreads or pages one at a time. This was really important, as I would print images via inkjet and then letterpress print the type. Being able to reprint only certain pages was a god send. Sweet!! Now all I need is a better inkjet printer to get those images looking their best. (I was using an Epson Workforce 1100). Still, this technique will prove very useful in book arts classes. Thanks to all!!
