I’ve been given an InD file with a large number of endnotes. These are static, endnotes, not linked in any way (cross references, etc.). The InD file is the second portion of a document and the endnotes (and corresponding endnote references in the text) need to start at 325, not 1, as is currently the case.

You could probably use this script somehow: https://creativepro.com/free-script-to-change-all-numbers-in-a-document-using-math.php

For example, the script lets you target numbers in various ways, including with a grep expression, so you could find numbers that are immediately preceded by a letter in the text.

Are the endnote numbers marked in any way, such as superscripted? If so, with a manual override? With a Character Style? The most optimal case would actually be if they all had a character style named “endnote” – in that case, it can be scripted without fear of accidentally changing “a² + b² = c²” to “a326 + b326 = c326” (which would be a problem, mainly because there are no such values for ‘a’, ‘b’, and ‘c’!).

Thanks! I’ll check these out. (yes, the refs have char styles).

I have a problem similar to this. I brought in a Word document with endnotes gathered at the end of the book. Numbering restarted with each chapter. InDesign (CS3) brought them in but numbered them consecutively, in the text reference and at the end. Not sure how to use that script because my grep skills are pretty nonexistent. I would like to choose a range for a chapter, say 24-30, and convert them to 1-7. Should be easy, if I knew how…
